ANALYSIS: Harsh COVID-19 lockdowns have been criticised by business groups, but it might be what the economy needs

It has been a pile-on for the past few months as Team Australia has splintered right down the political divide.

And the second is that, while it's almost impossible to measure the true cost of the lockdowns and the shutdowns, most critics look only at the costs and completely overlook the economic benefits the shutdowns have delivered.WatchVictoria's lockdown is undoubtedly containing the spread of the coronavirus. But many business owners say it's also destroying their livelihoods.

Exports to China are up more than 8 per cent compared a year ago and in the financial year to June 30, the commodity cracked the $100 billion export mark, up from the previous year's record $77.5 billion. When Intensive Care and Emergency Units are overloaded, people with medical conditions other than COVID-19 suffer and die, productivity plummets and confidence dives.

In the graph below, you need to add the blue and grey parts of each bar to gauge just how tough each country's approach to the first phase of the pandemic. The second graph measures economic performance. The study found similar results when comparing the different responses from states in the US. Had the harsh measures not been implemented, Victoria would not have gained control as quickly as it had, and it would only have been a question of time before a state problem became a national disaster.

125DanSergeant Might be How about now?!?!

Scapegoating - misattributing cause - won't solve any problems. Look to the evidence first.

DanielAndrewsMP has set the target of a 30 to 50 case average to move to the next step. It’s now 34 so people and businesses have every right to question why have we not moved to the next step as they all have made to effort to do the right thing, seems in vain if not rewarded.

Money or death . Choose.

HaHa. ELEVEN.

total rubbish. how can a virus in which 90% have mild or no symptoms cause a recession?

AusSue2 suuuuure JobSeeker, JobKeeper changes from September 25 may cause economic collapse The countdown is on to the day the rug will be pulled from under us. This is when Aussies will feel the real economic pain of the pandemic

I hope people see the lies / shills/bots and itself for the blatant outright PROPAGANDA we are being fed. *** CHOOSE YOUR SIDE ***

1. People not dying or permanently debilitated en masse from this horrible virus is more important that the economy 2. The economy needs a healthy population in order to function.

The Australian economy will be the envy of the world once we get this virus under control....simple.

Can't wait for business groups to tell us why opening up the UK economy was good. High street, business are closing, profits are falling intermittent lockdowns are applying all over the UK AND facing total lockdown once again. Not forgetting £10,000 fines for COVID breaches.

Flowing early form the ABC this week.

All I can say DEFUND YOU CNTS

Looks like this journo has been a total sucker for all the “new normal” and “reimagine this and that” propaganda McKinsey has been churning out since day 1 of this scamdemic.

Oh and not to mention the significant business support - $250k loan scheme, $10k grant, landlord slaughter, bank holidays, etc 6/10 small business loans are deferred- insolvency holiday (ending next week)

Our government has the ability to subsidise the salaries of 35% of its employee population (4m jobkeeper) and significantly increase unemployment for close to 1.5m people. Other countries have not been able to do this. Also why is Sweden excluded from this debate- GDP looks fine

This is some serious gaslighting. Oh thank you great and wise beurocrats for your wisdom in saving us from a mild disease by acting like authoritarian dictators and trying to destroy our lives You should be grateful serfs cos mining is doing well.

Many Victorians won't put themselves in unneccessary danger so that Wesfarmers and Harvey Norman can make extra profits I'll be spending with local traders again, as long as they have respected our health and safety springst ausbiz

Europa has eased too soon by allowing summer tourists n now they have a 2nd wave

You only have to look at the countries ahead of us to see what is coming. I have small business and would prefer to go hard now and hopefully not have the consequences repeat in a couple of months.

Only if the federal government keeps paying the bills

Just so we are all on the same page: Sweden no lockdown: economy tanked, Thailand: lockdown not necessary economy tanked, USA: not sure if they are doing anything 200000 dead: economy tanked. Dead people is not great for your economy.

Pack of bloody whingers ........get of your high horse and be grateful that you’re all still alive and healthy!

Uhh did China or the coronavirus write this article ? 🧐

The real solution to covid pandemic is to find out the origin of the virus, make china hand over their data, if not sanction their top officials. Hold china c.c.p accountable

There's no 'might be' about it: enough of the mealy-mouthed headlines this morning if you please!

Just what we need! Further analysis by some bloke who has no skin the the game living off the Aussie tax payer. Spare us please!

2 criminals right there!!! You will be incarcerated in due time !! The damage these two C grade beaurocrats have caused us bordering on irreparable!!!!!

Wtf

Yes, who is still on full wages and a pay rise ? The politicians. Not the people who make their wages.

After reading this article, the only conclusion is that no one at the ABC understands economics.

Putting your head in the sand and pretending coronavirus isn’t real won’t take it away. Denial and ignorance will do more damage to the economy than anything else. Victoria has done a good job, we are nearly there, so don’t stuff it up. Take care, stay strong, we can do it

Listen to this, Now I think it is time People get Fired! and start at the Top!!

Economy does not need these 2 in charge it’s because of them that we live in this lockdown hell

rubbish!

Victoria will return in good shape , when it’s safe to do so

Business groups complain about everything and anything that's not going in their pocket. Greedies with no social conscience.

Hoorah! business should be thankful they’ve had to lay off workers, plead for rent relief and loan extensions, and quite simply be not in business?

Whoever wrote this should be ashamed. Unemployment is up. People are not working. Do some basic research on purpose in society and wellbeing. The Mental health of our children, teens, adults & elderly is suffering. This government is unloving and full of their own selfworth.

Wow, the ABC is literally team Dan Andrews. Forget the tenets of good journalism (fair and balanced reporting/analysis). Here, Verrender's main argument is: hard lockdowns are good because Brazil applied them and that pushed up the iron ore price... Ian, retirement beckons.

What a pathetic article. ABC have been going down hill for a long time.

Andrews only aim is to crush private enterprise and have a state of subservient brainwashed citizens snitching on each other in the belief they are doing the right thing.

When will investigate Melbourne suicide rates? Or do we just believe the incredibly unreliable Dan Andrews Labor Government who has lied and manipulated data the entire Covid response? ItaButtrose ScottMorrisonMP

What the fuck is a business group good for?

Do they take us for fools? Closing an economy down almost completely is what it ‘needs’? Or is it just that those with secure jobs and incomes have everything to gain from lockdowns and little to lose, (except a bit of freedom which they can ride out in their pleasant gardens)

Andrews wants a broken Victorian economy so that he can create a socialist state & strengthen his political position. He wants business to leave (people who wouldn't vote for him anyway) and for those left to be the welfare/government dependent class. All for his gain, not yours!

Pravda

That is the biggest pile of horse sheet i have ever heard

Pandemic? Recovery rate to this 'pandemic' is similar to the normal flu!!! End the paranoia End the hysteria End the MASKarade End ALL restrictions NOW!!!

Yes, you're a country of former convicts, a penal colony, why russellcrowe sings you your national anthem Folsom Prison Blues, etc. BUT DEAD PEOPLE CAN'T BUY ANYTHING! They're dead. It's in their best interest to not kill their customers. This isn't hard or rocket science.

If only these ‘critical’ business groups would have the sense to see they’d have no businesses to represent, if we opened early and let rip. Or are they living in an alternate reality?

Dead people spend no money. Dead people work no jobs.

“economy needs?” LiberalsLiedPeopleDied FakeNewsABC 👇👇👇

So what. Dead people can't buy things, Australia. Quit being dumb like the Americans and Russians, mmkay? ;)

Granville4879 Yes, Business group are happy to see people die, just don't interfere with making a dollar.

Shameless and braindead

Do you realise that lockdowns aren't actually science?

'What the economy needs' Hmm September 21 Update Total deaths from C-Virus in Australia 849 of that Victoria C-Virus Deaths are 761, That's about 95% in Victoria All because Daniel Andrews failings with hotel quarantine

'Dan, your restrictions are killing this state! Every single measurable statistic shows the harm you're doing in the pursuit of an arbitrary target.' 'Just take this and write something nice about me.' 'Oooh... will do!'

It's been criticised by politicians and the media too.
