A new report finds 25% of women are considering downsizing or quitting their careers as a result of pandemic-related pressures. Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg says that 'should terrify all of us.'

"'Lean in' was always about men doing their share and companies doing their share," she says."So this report is not telling women to lean in, it's telling companies to lean in. It's telling companies to recognize that this wasn't working for women and mothers before coronavirus. And now it's much worse.

"Lean in" was always about women being able to go for leadership positions. It was always about men leaning in at home. ... Companies need to be flexible. Companies need to recognize the burdens women, particularly women of color, are facing at home. And companies need to adjust so that we don't lose the talent, the female talent, the women, the women of color that are so critical to doing well going forward.

On whether expectations of employees should be altered even as managers are becoming more comfortable with remote work I think it has to be changed. And look, companies are under pressure, large and small. There's an economic crisis going on, but we have to think beyond the quarter and think long term. At Facebook, we canceled our performance cycle for the first half of the year and we paid everyone their bonus at over 100% percent, the same bonus. We just paid it to everyone. Because we were saying, we know you need to take care of your children and yourselves and elderly relatives. We mean it.

Companies need to adjust their performance criteria to recognize that there is a crisis. And then that old quote,"Crisis is a terrible thing to waste" — we need to take this as the opportunity it can be to rethink work. You're right, this report shows that more companies are open to remote work. Remote work, less work travel — those things come out in the report. Those things could make a very big difference going forward for women to stay in the workforce and be able to thrive.

I truly can’t believe anyone is still giving this horrible person air time. She has caused immeasurable damage to the country and the globe in the pursuit of cash. She should be universally shunned.

Blah blah blah... Sounds like someone had nothing to write about.

Being a stay at home mother is the most important job a mother can do.

Your not allowed to complain about the impacts npr. You lost the right with all your pandemic guilt trips on those that saw this coming and wanted the country open

If it comes out of Facebook then its true. Gulp, gulp

Facebook terrifies us all sherylsandberg

When I retired from a major corporation, I could not wait to LEAN OUT of this BS program. Slogans are for weak people, and for weak leaders. Treat PEOPLE like people.

Stop trust-washing this bish and holding these assholes up as anything other than great destroyers of privacy in this country. Ffs, what the hell happened to you guys?

Sheryl Sandberg is the devil. Seriously if she cared about women (or anything other than money) she’d quit FB

Maybe because they realize they WANT to stay home with their kids? 😱

No... companies need to reduce what they consider to be full-time, allow for paternal and maternal leave, and stop paying their CEOs 10000x what the average worker makes

Yep. Keep lockdowns on, see more women’s careers destroyed

Why are we still listening to Sheryl Sandberg?

Easy for her to say

Why can't Facebook execs acknowledge that their website is a breeding ground for polarization and conspiracy theories? Don't just delete posts. People will always find a way to put them back up.

I thought “Ban Bossy” would solve everything.

Why? Because women are prioritizing taking care of their families?

🙄 C’mon NPR. You’re better than this

First tome I’ve heard single motherhood described as progress.

Wtf ?

The only thing we should be terrified of is FaceBOOK!!

Thank our disfunctional government at every level from federal to state to local.

Stop trying to keep up with men in the workplace as the bar to 'equality'. Strive for balance instead.

The fact that NPR believes that Sandberg is someone whose opinion matters at this point is beyond bizarre. What happened to you, NPR? Can I ask KCRW to just stop sending you lapdogs my money? Lean in to destroy democracy.

The news is really making it seem like this will last forever but it won't. This virus is temporary and we can live our lives without focusing on it 24 7 . Wear a mask keep distance and you'll be fine . At worst we have another year like this

She should be asking herself what roll her company played in the pandemic and maybe then she'd see what's really terrifying. And then maybe think long and hard about what she's actually done for women.

This is disappointing. Why is Sandberg now trying to resurrect “Lean In” with corporations after failing with women? I just don’t see the relevance.

To do what? Spend time with their kids? At home? Pursuing other things they enjoy?

I hope she is one of the 25%

I'm a man but I left a full-time job to work part-time and while I make far less money I am far happier because I spend so much more time with my friends, family and hobbies. Nobody gets to their death bed and says 'I wish I had worked more'.

She is an attn seeking buffoon. Tribe member amp it where she is by daddy and her being one of the chosen tribe. Blah blah blah is all she does.

You know what should really terrify us? Sandberg's company enabling genocides.

Maybe sheryl sandberg should focus on her complicity in destroying democracies all over the world.

Our governments failure to support its people. Everyone has been reporting for weeks about how women carry the majority of this burden. Homeschooling, taking care of elderly parents or both! Something had to give and unfortunately this will only exacerbate the pay inequality

LOL.

That’s on them and their pocketbooks

Says the head of one of the biggest purveyors of covid disinformation on the planet. She can’t hear them over the sound of the dollars pouring into Facebook.

Why would this be scary? Maybe they decided being stay at home wives and/or moms is worth more than a job. That should not terrify anyone.

They’ll do what are new tech rulers want us to do. Work from home. Here comes the Covid Fear Machine.

So they want to pursue other things and that's a problem?

She should worry about the terrifying nature of her own company first.

Why? It’s their choice.

She is terrifying all of us

What’s terrifying is her company’s refusal to rein in the spread of disinformation

I retired early because at 66 they wouldn't let me work remotely. Trump should be paying all of our salaries instead of expecting us to work in the pandemic he caused by his greed and negligence.

Wonderful news for all those making good decisions for their families. I so believe in the power of people to make good decisions over money. Americans have too much interest in big houses, versus the health of their families.

Her company is complicit. Tell sherylsandberg to look in a mirror.

OHHHHHH SHIT

She terrifies me.

No one who works for facebook has anything to say to me

Not now, NPR

Silver lining.
