A coalition of Indian restaurants in Ottawa is calling for municipal action against home\u002Dbased South Asian kitchens that the restaurateurs say are illegal and undercutting their business.

Dandamudi drafted an email that restaurateurs last week sent en masse to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. The letter says residential kitchens are uninspected, unlicensed and unregulated and that they require the city’s attention.

“Residential kitchens are not only illegal but are dangerous,” says the letter. “Commercial cooking requires commercial-grade kitchen and residential kitchens are not commercial-grade kitchen. Not only putting themselves and their families in danger, these individuals are putting their whole neighbourhood in danger of fire.”Article content continued

Chapman said the city will investigate concerns about specific businesses if they are brought to its attention by calls to 311. Dandamudi said she believes many residential kitchens are operated by stay-at-home mothers who either don’t know or don’t care about the regulations.
