Gig workers have a lot more to gain under a Joe Biden presidency, like unemployment benefits and paid time off

Joe Biden's plan to provide unemployment benefits and paid time off to gig workers goes well beyond those that Prop. 22, if passed, will create.

The candidate has opposed the California ballot measure, accusing firms like Uber of "trying to gut the law and exempt their workers." Instead, Biden hopes to use AB5 — the state law Prop. 22 would replace — as a national model for employer versus contractor classification. A federal fund for emergency paid leave would cover 100% of weekly earnings, with a cap at $1,400, Biden's campaign website says. Gig workers, who are currently not guaranteed any emergency paid leave, would also be entitled to employment relief in a move similar to the first stimulus package in March.
