Ibadan South-East Local Government Area of Oyo State has begun an empowerment programme for youths and women in the area to encourage them to participate in poultry production in order to boost food p

roduction in the state.

The chairman of the local government, Mr Oluwole Alawode, who gave out 1,000 special breeds of birds to the beneficiaries at the local government secretariat in Ibadan on Thursday told our correspondent in an interview that more investment needed to be made into agriculture.Alawode said the agricultural empowerment programme of the council would keep the youths productively engaged and would ensure food security.

He said there were many benefits for the state and the nation if the youths begin to go into agriculture, saying they could make more money from Agric than engaging in paid jobs. He said, “ We are doing this to empower our youths and to boost food production. We have to begin to invest in agriculture in order to be self sufficient in food production.

“ We chose noiler because they are a rugged breed, they have higher resistance to poultry diseases and they can be raised in confined environment and on free range. Noilers can also feed on poultry feeds and food remnant and grains.All rights reserved.
