U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Monday as investors balanced worries around a new more contagious strain of COVID-19 against a pandemic relief package set to be voted on by lawmakers in Washington.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.12% rose 0.1%, or 37 points, to 30,216, based on preliminary numbers. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.39% fell 0.4%, or 15 points, to end at 3,695. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.10% was down 13 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 12,743.

Markets were resilient to concerns around a new strain of the COVID-19 disease discovered in the U.K. that precipitated further lockdown and social distancing measures in parts of the country Tesla Inc. shares TSLA, -6.49% slid over 6% in its first day of trading as a S&P 500 constituent.
