Canadian companies may have spent the past year laying off staff and dealing with temporary closures stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, but that isn't stopping many from rewarding workers this holiday season.

Several, including the country's top banks, say they are planning to thank their staff for a year of hard work with year-end bonuses -- and some are even topping up the amount.

Royal Bank of Canada, the country's second most valuable company on the TSX, said it will offer bonuses to recognize everything its staff have done to support each other, their clients and their communities in a tough year. Meanwhile, engineering firm Siemens Canada announced it will split $3.4 million between all employees that aren't senior managers.

E-commerce company Shopify Inc. eclipsed RBC to become the most valuable company on the TSX during the pandemic and reported massive profits as it helped small businesses switch to online sales.

Like all big bus. Making big profit on the backs of working class

You meant to say American and Chinese owned didn't you

I bet it’s 90% of the bonus money to upper management spread among an elite few while the large majority of employees dealing with the public get pennies in comparison

American owned companies in Canada not so much ontariosoldout

Most people that I know who received a bonus this year, actually spent most of it.. such as house renovations which stimulate our economy and support local businesses. Is this a bad thing ?

Good. Let's all get back to business.

Really where? In my community I continually see businesses closing, job loss, increase in food bank demands, financial stress has courthouse processing 10 divorces a day, epidemic of male suicides that CBC did a story on our community, so where is this happening?

A family member works for the Canadian division of a global company. They worked their ass of this year- almost breaking. Glad they received a nice bonus. Some are drowning in biz bc of the pandemic, some are on dry shores. The world isn’t balanced.

Not Shel, they got the jam of the month club bonus, lol

Canadians are MORE concerned that we are getting a TRICKLE of a few 1000 vaccines (124,000 & 168,000) for 38 million people & completion dates of SEPT-DECEMBER, while SPAIN gets 350,000 doses a WEEK...why is Canada so BEHIND other industrialized nations

Nothing wrong with this. These are private enterprises. If they are able to pay bonuses during this time, good on them. Why don't you report more on Gov / PH getting full pay while forcing businesses to close?

Look to Linamar, increasing dividends to line the pockets of the controlling family. For some reason an auto parts company as sits at Premiere Fords Vaccine task force. They also got a contract to build ventilators that will never be used and I’m not sure if they were ever made.

Sad that we allow this but most thee people receiving the bonuses are politically connected this will never stop ! Jokes on us the blue collar working stiffs !

We downsized around 50%.

MPs wages, carbon tax increases take effect April 1

Not where I work and its an essential Company.

Yet Canada Pension Plan continues to invest outside of Canada and losses $ millions. You’d this this would be a top story on Canadian MSM. Instead 🦗🦗🦗

Despicable..

Really where? In my community I continually see businesses closing, job loss, increase in food bank demands, financial stress has courthouse processing 10 divorces a day, epidemic of male suicides that CBC did a story on our community, so where is this happening?

BMO is where Trudeau hid his stash.

I call bull shit and believe the opposite... because is fake news!!

narendramodi

Meanwhile artists/musicians were forced into debt and heavy losses, while paying banks and credit card companies fees and extra interest, both of which were never adjusted downward to help Canadians. No such thing as “We are all in this together”!

Since banks are declaring HUGE profits, they can give small businesses back the % on credit cards..restaurants etc who are suffering with government lockdowns. Delivery services were asked to waive fees..(lowest paid people) banks step up! Also cover clients disputed cc claims.

Alternate headline: Companies not giving bonuses and hoarding cash. Better? Morons.

Paid for by looting the wage subsidy. On behalf of taxpayers, you’re welcome! 🖕🏼

Then you got the frontline employees getting garbage...

What about Bonus pay out for BCE executives? CTV News Executives? IMHO propagandists with no education should not be paid like CTV Executives. They destroy society and add no Value.
