Though he didn't speak English, Idrobo moved to the US and spent a year-and-a-half at the University of Florida, where he completed an ESL program. In April 2018, a year after he had left Adidas — and a few days after his contract role with Nike ended — Idrobo got calls from Smith and West, the latter of whom offered him a job with Yeezy on the spot.

In general, making connections is crucial for success in the industry, he added. In Idrobo's case, keeping in touch with his former colleagues yielded an unexpected benefit later in his career. "Everyone wants to be a designer," he said. "But the real need in the industry is pattern makers." According to Idrobo, specializing in pattern making is a helpful way to get a foot in the door. Once inside, it's not difficult to transfer from pattern-making to design.
