Amazon employees say they were caught off guard by Andy Jassy's promotion, but some think they know who the next AWS CEO will be

Amazon employees point to awho seem most likely to take over for Jassy. DeSantis, the infrastructure boss who won the office poll, sales and marketing chief Matt Garman, and head of utility computing services Charlie Bell, have been mentioned in equal measure by employees who spoke to Insider as the executives most likely to be named AWS's next CEO.a group of about two dozen leaders from across the company who work closely together on key business decisions.

One insider also suggested an external candidate: Adam Selipsky, a longtime AWS VP who left in 2016 to become CEO of Tableau, a data visualization company later acquired by Salesforce."He and Andy are tight," the person said. The person also said the"dark horse" pick could be Chris Vonderhaar, an infrastructure VP who's a level below Bell, DeSantis, and Garman, but is close with Jassy.

Some employees on Amazon's retail side of business, however, worry that Jassy's appointment will change the overall work environment to one that resembles the culture at AWS. One person said AWS has a reputation for being a"tougher" workplace, compared to other parts of the company, and that it's harder to adjust to AWS's culture than it is the other way around.

The biggest change, however, may be less emphasis on the kind of big bets for which Bezos is known, according to one former senior-level employee. Many of Amazon's biggest"moonshot" ideas came from Bezos, this person said, though they didn't always work out, as seen in Amazon's failed Fire Phone. For better or worse, however, Bezos has always kept Amazon's ambitions high, this person said.
