Opinion: Our children must be allowed to navigate the intricacies of the playground and the classroom, and the way they organise themselves will help shape them for life, writes Daisy Turnbull.

Whether your child has been attending day care or preschool or not, starting “big school” is a huge jump. I remember my son Jack was exhausted by Thursdays in his first term, and Fridays were always collapse-in-a-heap-on-the-couch nights. But school also opens up the world beyond the family, and there are moments of insight into who your child will be when they grow up.

The first time my then six-year-old son, Jack, told me I seemed stressed I was both horrified and proud. I didn’t want him to know I was stressed, but I was impressed that he could recognise and identify the emotion. Imagine for a second that your child is excellent at a particular sport and plays it all through school, and then for some reason in year 11 they don’t get into the team. That would be really hard for your child and the family.

I have spoken to parents whose children are going through difficulties – maybe academic, maybe social, it could be anything. The parents usually tell me that they’ve been through all of these experiences themselves. But if your kids aren’t seeing you experience the frustrations of life, they may not believe you when you tell them that mistakes are part of learning, or start espousing growth mindsets and grit.

TIL that this is something that people must be told

Lack of a guiding set of narratives: simple schizophrenia!?

We need to make sure kids grow to be good little economic units who feed the economic machine without question.

To tell you the truth we should be advocating to end bullying (by students and staff) in Australian schools, and protect kids online too. This is not a priority. If we can beat the virus why can’t we beat bullying? Some kids face hell in school. There must be a solution to this.

I half read this. What a load of waffle.

But yet we don't let children have time to truly know who they are The gender similarities hypothesis holds that males and females are similar on most, but not all, psychological variables. That is, men and women, as well as boys and girls, are more alike than they are different

I tried many, MANY sports for my daughter but she never took, then she became an animator on YouTube. There’s no looking back for her or outwards either 🤷‍♀️Kids these days are so encrypted into their ‘narrow pathway’. But with her, I’m glad she knows what she wants.
