Hong Won-sik announced his resignation at a Tuesday press conference and said he was taking “all responsibility” for the false claim, though he and his family members will hold onto their combined 52.1% stake of the company. Namyang aggressively promoted research it had commissioned which claimed its Bulgaris yogurt drink was effective at inhibiting Covid-19 by 77.8% and the H1N1 influenza virus strain by 99.99%. by 29%, the highest peak since 1978, after the purported research findings were presented at a symposium it funded last month.

Namyang’s headquarters were raided by Seoul police last week and the company’s CEO, Lee Kwang-bum, also offered to step down. “I express my sincere apology for causing disappointment and anger to our country’s people with the Bulgaris-related controversy at a time when the nation is undergoing a hard time because of Covid-19,” Hong said at the Tuesday press conference.Compared to other countries, South Korea has kept the coronavirus largely under control throughout the pandemic.
