Broadband is one of the few things on which a divided congress can agree. But will that be enough to finally get fast internet into rural America?

The push comes as commercial wireless carriers in the United States are building out next-generation, 5G data networks. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have all pledged to ensure that rural areas would not be left out as 5G supplants LTE, the current wireless service also called 4G.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi applaud. Biden said he was tasking Harris with the passage of $100 billion for universal broadband internet access.Broadband also shows up in the GOP’s counter-proposal at $65 billion. While that’s more than a third less than Biden’s proposal, it’s the second most costly line item in the GOP offering, behind roads and bridges.

And U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, supports broadband funding but is concentrating on exactly how it will get paid for. Besides the infrastructure proposals from both parties, there are several standalone bills promoting broadband, as well as other general infrastructure proposals that allow funds to be spent for internet access in underserved areas. The most notable is Accessible, Affordable Internet For All introduced by U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-MN, and James Clyburn, D.-SC.
