Mr Wright said "the UK shopper and consumer could have previously expected just about any product they want to be on the [supermarket] shelf or in the restaurant all the time.As the sector adapts to structural changes in the labour market, Mr Wright said that firms are having to make decisions over which products to prioritise.
Empty shelves seen at a Sainsbury's in London in September, which has been blamed on the lorry driver shortage Mr Wright said the shortage is "driven by a combination of a number of factors". He warned that the resulting supply chain issues are "going to get worse", adding that "it's not going to get better after getting worse any time soon".
Lorry driver shortages have also have been blamed on EU workers leaving the UK following Brexit as well as during the pandemic and tax changes making it more expensive for drivers from elsewhere in Europe to work or be employed in the UK.
Supply chain issues have become more worse in this covid time
Tbf the article does mention brexit once in the 4th from last paragraph 🙄
All goes down to how you treat your employees and how you pay them. Those days when you could treat them badly are gone at least for UK. To be independent a lot industry will need come back. Margins will be lower, profit too. But country will grow. It will take time.
Stupid Press here we go again people will be stockpiling again.
Good. Too much stuff anyway which probably gets chucked out.
Good news if we concentrate on local if possible, fresh or 'natural' and leave the processed microwavable pap to rot, the knock-on effect will be positive for health and the NHS.... NO doubt the exact opposite will actually happen..
What absloute rubbish by the BBC!
Thank goodness you’re not encouraging panic buying which will create even more shortages!
We won’t have any money to purchase anything so what’s the problem?!
Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit Supply chain issues = Brexit
Enjoying Brexit boys DominicRaab & BorisJohnson 😆😆
What irresponsible reporting. I may not always be able to buy the specific items on my shopping list but I still manage to come home with three heavy bags of groceries each week. None of us are short of food.
Brexit … your reply ratio is a tell … your editorial spin is appalling
Just don't mention the 'B' word...🤫
Well boo hoo, stop wanting everything and anything, it's unsustainable.
Just live off cereal like me simple
Brexit
Manchester food stores are full 😂😂😂
We could have 100,000 more drivers & raise wages of drivers but isn’t going to speed up the paperwork or the checking of goods. Both will substantially raise prices too. 🤷♀️ Don’t forget to thank the Govt for bypassing parliamentary scrutiny (our democracy) to “get brexit done”.
The Propaganda Network still refusing to use the B word I see.
Brexit.
Try your local market if you are lucky enough to have one.
Rejoice fellow plebs, rejoice!!!
Not sure where these empty supermarkets are? Every one I go in seems fine , must be just in Islington !!
From last year!
BBC using old stock film!
“Permanent”.....as in “forever”? Do you have a crystal ball or are just making things up as usual?
The Special Offers shelf is empty. It must be near closing time. Never mind, had got the picture it wants.
Of course….🤭🙄
Oh no we are all going to starve!!!
In a couple of years, when the public has seen enough of this mess, Brexit will be mentioned again by politicians who (currently) daren't mention it. Only then will we begin the slow process of rejoining the eu. It's inevitable but will take time is all.
Well... We vague lefty Remainers are clearly hoping that there will be food shortages in order to shame the government, but TBH, I have yet to actually see any evidence of them where I live (Swindon, Wilts).
All the fatties and lefties will be first to complain as they wont find their favourite doughnuts and chocolate. The rest of us understand the situation without politicising the shortages. Go figure.....grow up.
Shelves in shops and supermarkets will be virtually empty by Christmas and there will be rationing brought in by suppliers.
Why wasn't all the warnings listened to by the same people who voted Brexit who are now mostly affected? You cannot eat your cake and then ask to have it.
What’s the army doing just a thought if it’s that bad
As food consumers we are too spoilt in this country. As long as we can get the basics and have enough to live on, the rest doesn't matter that much. So what if we can't get certain 'luxury' items?
Shoppers unlikely to have a wide range of food products to choose from in supermarkets, due to BREXIT, REST OF THE WORLD warnED
O well what goes around comes around
Why don't you say it as it is - BREXIT
Well I won't panic yet. As far as I'm aware they haven't introduced rationing
There's no downside, only sunlit uplands
Great headline, will it be milk, bread basic foods or escargot? I'm sure we have minister's/civil servants not doing a lot so the government must sort it out NOW. Also stop scare mongering.
BEEXIT say it for god sake BREXIT
Think that's pretty clear. From the horses mouth.
Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit Brexit
£200 Billion for empty shelves, Cause he’s worth it !
What a strategy 🤣
