Brian Flores's class-action suit against the NFL has once again brought racial discrimination in coach hiring to the forefront. AndrewBrandt goes over the history of the Rooney Rule, the sham interview dilemma, and more on the suit

On Tuesday afternoon, I was teaching my sports law and business class at Villanova Law School. The subject of the day was the changing nature of college athletics and the sea change due to the Alston case and

A defining feature of plaintiffs in sports law is personal sacrifice to serve the greater good, sacrificing future careers to help those of people who will follow. Examples include Curt Flood, John Mackey and, yes, Colin Kaepernick. We can nowFlores likely understands what so many have commented on since his firing: That bringing such a case is potentially terminal to his NFL coaching career. First of all, I am not so sure: never is a very long time.

in which Bill Belichick, thinking he was texting Brian Daboll , revealed that the Giants had made up their mind on Daboll before interviewing Flores. This issue is a tough one. Owners often lock in on a candidate and get singularly focused in their dogged pursuit of that coach. AndrewBrandt To make the candidate pool as wide as possible, why doesn't NFL put a moratorium on head coach interviews until day after Super Bowl? Most teams have vacancy based on their decision to fire coach- leave it to front office/existing staff to hold down fort until new coach in place.

AndrewBrandt Some pretty irresponsible wording regarding the Giants here, Andrew.

AndrewBrandt You needed a lawsuit to bring this topic onto your radar? Cool reporting SI.

AndrewBrandt If you haven't watched the Flores interview with MSNBC's chrislhayes earlier this week, I would recommend it. Hayes also does a recap of the issue leading into the interview which a stellar explanation of the issues involved.

AndrewBrandt Idea - NFL needs an objective screening process to identify qualified & diverse head coaching candidates for owners to select from. Owners choosing a separate candidate must sacrifice a 2nd round pick.

AndrewBrandt Imagine even needing such a rule because your whole system is inherently racist! If it wasn’t you wouldn’t need a Rooney Rule or it’s enhancements. The NFL would already be well-diversified & reflective of its players & the nation they play in🤔 FoodForThought

AndrewBrandt Funny thing is the players don’t seem to care they get cash every 2 weeks they are good. Take a stand

AndrewBrandt Make the playoffs like Tomlin does every season and you won’t get fired …pretty simple concept…comical that the talking heads cry racism but then say they need minority owners to hire more minority coaches which would also be racist according to their claims 🤔

SI_outofbounds AndrewBrandt Of course, throw race card out any and every time a black doesn't get hired, or gets fired...easy....

AndrewBrandt Umm the Fins have nothing to do with the racial part of the lawsuit. Idiots.
