Eight suspects were shot dead while 10 were arrested during the deadly exchange of fire.

The suspect was arrested during a crime intelligence-led multi-disciplinary operation. The 42-year-old is believed to be part of a 25-member gang that was on its way to rob a cash van, but were intercepted by police. “Further investigation led to his place of residence, where a search was conducted and the following were recovered: four assault rifles, five pistols including the one found in his possession, rifle and pistol magazines, more than 1 000 ammunition, channel jammers, G4s and SAPS bulletproof vests and uniform.

Six others remain on the run. Commissioner General Elias Mawela says the net is closing in on criminals in the province.
