Trudeau and Ford’s use of emergency legislation was pure show business

Peter H. Russell is a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Toronto

Flash back a few weeks to early February, when several hundred large trucks were blocking the streets of Ottawa. Did that constitute “a public order emergency” that “necessitates the taking of special measures”? What needed to be done to get the trucks out of there? The only answer I can think of is that the Ottawa police would have had to ask the truckers to move their vehicles and, if the drivers refused, then threaten to remove them by force.

In directing the police, government officials should be careful to ensure that their instructions tell the police they must protect the constitutional and common law rights of all persons. These rights include freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Wow! Not sure what this opinion piece is about. What I do know is that the Centertown residents were basically terrorized for 3 weeks and all levels of government and the police did nothing to make them feel safe. This lack of action is what should be investigated. Why?

Those that can…do. Those that can’t…teach. Those that can’t teach….become out of touch university professors. It’s an opinion piece that misses the point. Sometimes difficult situations require leaders to take bold actions. It worked. It’s easy to criticize from the sidelines.

I seen Ukraine pres with a ak fighting and your trudeau hides from truckers think about it hes a leader?

I don’t care if they used the Q shaman to remove those parasites in Ottawa. If that show business was effective and than that is what was needed. Now onto real issues Ukraine.

Perhaps, but two cliches apply. Walk softly and carry a big stick and the ends justify the means.
