A number of Driver License Testing Centres (DLTCs) across Gauteng are still not operational due to an ongoing strike by driving school operators.

In Johannesburg, a few DLTCs have opened. These include Langlaagte, Randburg, Roodepoort and Sandton.

Driving school operators are aggrieved about the online booking systems introduced in 2018 aimed at cutting long queues and eliminating corruption at the centres. However, the operators say they are experiencing challenges when trying to book slots. They want the online system to be scrapped and allow for walk-ins.

“We are demanding manual system. We want to go manual and we want walk-ins. When you register, they need old information that you entered in 2010, if you’ve changed the numbers, there system does not allow you to enter. We have decided as driving institutes that they must scrap this online thing. If we are not heard, we are going to continue with our strike and the DLTCs are not going to open,” a driving school operator explains.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula is expected to visit DLTCs across the province starting in Akasia in Pretoria as part of conducting oversight. These driving school operators say they are fed up with the online systems which they say is continuously down.We have engaged the Driving School workers on their concerns and we will through an organized process report back to them.
