This comes after residents of Galeshewe in Kimberley accused the municipality of failing to respond to service delivery challenges including sewerage spillages in the sprawling township.
Despite admitting that the municipality is facing challenges, Saul says some service delivery challenges are historical. “The bulk infrastructure network in Kimberley was designed only for 12 000 households, you know … its bulk sewer network, which was designed in order to provide flushing toilets for white communities. With the post-1994 dispensation, we have expanded these services to previously disadvantaged communities. Currently, in Sol Plaatjie, just here in Kimberley alone, we are sitting with more than 60 000 households connected to bulk infrastructure which was not upgraded,” says Saul.
