ANALYSIS: Why did we lease Darwin's port to a Chinese company?

Thirty-three private investors expressed interest, and after months of assessment, Landbridge was declared the successful bidder for the long-term lease.

Even US President Barack Obama — who had signed off on the annual deployment of US Marines to the Top End in 2011 — was said to have expressed his dissatisfaction to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. "There was no reason, based on security consideration at any rate, as to why this transaction should not go forward," the then ASIO director-general Duncan Lewis told a parliamentary committee at the time.

"And having the future of that infrastructure — whether additional birthing spaces and the decisions around that — sitting in the hands [that] are under the influence of the Chinese Communist Party, who have a very different set of objectives to our own, I think that's the bigger issue."

Yes why?

The first mistake was allowing a public asset to fall into disrepair. The second mistake was privatising it.

Why not?

Money

As the liberals

Don't be ignorant. Do we have anything else to sell? Are there other ways for Australia to go out and sell raw materials to support its economy?

Because Andrew Robb was.looking for a post-politics Sinecure with the Chinese company.

Because of Chinese corruption

Good question, can't believe it wasn't raised sooner TBH.

If you look into what we have sold to the US companies, I am sure it will make you wonder if you are living in the states.

I don't understand

Outraged citizens seem to be doing the research that you are not doing!!!

About time... Jesus... start asking serious question ABC!!! Instead of shallow mindless dribble ... we used to rely on the media to look out for and fight for the best interests of our country and its people

SpotDoggedy Testing the social credit system that's coming, Covid was to implement the infrastructure for a checkpoint society. Sorry snowflakes I know this is not what the TV says.

Why? Adam Giles the CLP Chief Minister was following the Liberal playbook in spending like a drunken sailor, privatising everything and facilitated by Federal Liberals, all in complete secrecy. These things don't happen by chance or accident, it's their DNA

Because we’re idiots chasing only the $$$

After going through this article, couldn’t find a good reason why this port was leased to a Chinese company..

Corrupt cash grab we sold most of Sydney Melbourne and most manufacturing to the chinks before covid for the easy cash

China besides being an enemy authoritian state does not allow reciprocal investment in their critical infrastructure so why should Australia ?

Another question for why ‘we’ have let US linked its military fuel pipeline straight to port of Darwin, if the leased port to the Chinese is such a ‘threat’ to our national security?

Haa any reporter asked this?

The reason Darwin port was leased to the Chinese is because federal government at the time (LNP) refused to fund the ageing Darwin Port. Secondly, it’s not ‘we’ this is in of those ‘gotcha’ questions should be asking PM Morrison.

Cash

Because it’s for sale!

Why did Andrew Robb (LNP) get paid nearly a million dollars a year to work for the buyer after he left politics?

Graft, corruption, rorts 💰💲🤑 auspol

Bc Scott Morrison allowed it. Simple. A failure of national security.

The question is 'Who was bribes to lease a port to a Chinese co'....follow the cash

nothing personal, just business

good question. i would like hear the real reason. no spin.

Considering ASPI are a basic military lobby group created + sent by the US to manipulate national narratives, why do ABC insist on seeking comment from them? Perhaps try answering the question? A: Libs love privatisation + see essential public infrastructure as pocket money.

Good question...most probably for the money

NT government broke needed funds .China has unlimited funds same as Solomon Iland deal money talks.

Money 💰

Money, sweet Chinese money that has now bitten us on the ass, it doesn't matter who you vote for people, China will screw us either way.

ICAC will reveal soon.

Because the LNP made money from it. Why else. Money is the chief motivator for the LNP government to do anything. I thought that was obvious.

Vote Morrison out - Time to go

We didn't .. the LNP did and then the bloke who done the deal went to work for the CCP .. tell us again how the LNP protect our borders... didn't read the story because its probably more spin for the LNP.

Lnp did. !

YOU may be the LNP, ABC, but WE eren't.

'We' didn't... They did! LNPMassiveFail

Corruption

I'm sure the simple answer is someone got shitloads of money put in their bank account and told the government that this is a great idea ! 🤔

Because we're fucking stupid

But 'vote liberal for strong border protection' LOL Yes they certainly have done an impressive job on relations with China, France and the Solomons !

💰

There was fuckery afoot here some one was given an enormous bride to push the deal through then given a $800.000 job per annum from the chinese company who leased the port more liberal Corruption

The Port of Darwin was leased for one reason only: Naked Greed. LNPMassiveFail LNPCorruptionParty ScottyFromCorruption AlboForPM AusVotes2022

Duh! Because our foreign ownership laws went out the window with government wanting foreign money because of bad home economics. And China investment is because no Aussie investment and our biggest trading partner.

How is the Coalition thinking of the future by suggesting Australian tax payers now build a second Port. So busy outsourcing why was is not considered worthwhile for the Feds to make the improvements originally. Now we are paying the price

Stupid idea.

Someone must've got a paper bag full of 💸💰 to pass something so stupid

Not ‘We’ ! It was SCOMO’S LNP!

Because our government has been complacement about China

Hope our country's flag is not made in....? If that is the case ...think twice before you vote...

The Liberal Party for cash, like back before WW2 when the Libs were selling iron ore to the Japanese.

The sale of the Port of Darwin was on Treasurer Scott Morrison’s watch, was given clearance by National security and FIRB

It doesn't matter why the LNP (not 'we') leased the port to China... The fact is they DID.

Because the LNP don't have loyalty to Australia or the people they only have loyalty to corporate companies and money. How many ports do we own in China 🤔 auspol auspoll

Why have we sold them half the country? Why are we selling to them Waterworks and other infrastructure or could call strategic positioning....Govt is so short-sighted it's beyond belief. moneywins peopleareexpendable. Time for revolution.

“Birthing” places? Or “berthing” places ?

in the good old days everything was on the market to anybody........crazy

So Andrew Robb ex Liberal could get an $800k job with Landbridge before he even resigned from parliament

Let’s be clear: LiberalAus is the single biggest national security risk. Not just because they’re selling off critical infrastructure and resources to China, but also because they’re owned by Murdoch. AlboForPM ScottyTheCompletePsycho AusVotes2022

Liberal Party did.

$$

We? Why did the LNP..? auspol

Ask scvntmo the great 💔

Because the Liberals are “Strong on National Security “. I’m sure Scotty and Andrew Robb would be happy to appear on 730 anytime to explain. ChuckThemOut

Tear up the contract.

We? Ask LNP? Why do have to drag the rest of Australia? We didn't sign up for this?

Because also we are idiots

Cash

Labor sells off Port of Melbourne 2016

CREAM

Ask Andrew Robb
