"We really need the government to come to the table in the coming days with some support and solutions to support these essential facilities being in our communities", said Huw Edwards, chief executive officer of UKActive. He said tackling this by reducing the temperature of pools was being considered but government support was required.
Many of the facilities built in the past 20 to 30 years did not have "energy efficient facilities" to support the reduction in costs, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Instead, he said, central government needed to work with local and industry leaders to find a solution in the coming months.Sportspark at the University of East Anglia in Norwich had to close because of a chlorine shortage
Some 72% of primary schools relied on swimming pools and the rising energy costs "pose a very real and significant issue" for the leisure industry, the LGA said.
Energy firms making record profits at the expense of everything else. We need to take back control of our energy production.
I don't like plain up and down pools with lanes people get in my way I'm a backstroker. I prefer wave machines. The water cost as well the chlorine is also in trouble
It doesn’t threaten them at all. They just increase the costs into the public and the public will pay it.
I predict there will soon be a shortage of lard 🏊♂️😬
We are living a new reality. Nothing will go back, we have to keep that in mind. It is not the war of Ukraine, it will be the world war if Trump wins the next elections. His buddy countries are Russia, North Corea and others extremist countries. EU has to stop being coward
Less people are already going swimming as you can't just turn up anymore... another example of not getting back to normal post covid...
Probably labour councils because they have already been bankrupted.
We are ahead of the game with this in Falmouth. Our pool has shut already. But for any others, my advice is if you lower water temperatures people won't go. Its no fun swimming if the pool is freezing.
Cold water swimming is better for you...
It doesn't help, when you cannot book, to go swimming, because of covid restrictions. So less people can go swimming.
I was wondering about this and hope the gym doesn’t increase prices massively. I swim outdoors.
