Shoppers are warned to expect to pay more for lamb at the supermarket, as the sheep industry prepares for a future without live export.

Shoppers have been warned to expect to pay more for lamb at the supermarket, as the sheep industry prepares for a future without live exports.A well established WA sheep producer is quitting the industry due to the looming shut down of live exportsBut one of WA's largest livestock companies does not expect sheep numbers or prices paid to farmers to reduce

He said the sheep industry in Western Australia would shrink without its "backbone" of live export, and it would be lamb consumers who would pay the price at the supermarket.Dandaragan farmer Richard Brown is getting out of the sheep industry. He said there was a range of factors pushing WA farmers out of sheep, including the volatility of sheep pricing and difficulty accessing services like shearing or transport and processing space.

"As the industry contracts it gets harder and harder and it starts to force the decision of others who might have wanted to stick around." "It is becoming more and more of a niche purchase. Gone are the days where you'd sit around and have a Sunday lamb.

I don't think so. We export the best overseas and we get the dregs and are still paying top dollar for it. While it's good by demand the best as a consumer, you don't mean that the domestic consumer gets the dregs of the lot (or is that the lees)? wheresours

You expect people to believe that! What a load of nonsense.

Whatever happened to the old paradigm, supply and demand? It applies to lettuce, why not lamb? And look at the gas situation! Exports create a shortage and shortage drives price up.

Oh I’m so surprised the ‘industry’ would say this.... a bit like the gas industry saying our gas would be more expensive here if we didn’t give it away to ‘industry’ multinationals. Do better ABC ItaButtrose stop trying to be MurdochGutterMedia

Such consent-manufacturing propaganda. My family produced lamb. We always rejected offers for live export on principle. We never had any problem selling to domestic market. Stop doing the lnp's dirty work.

Bullshit

We'll be paying more for lamb because there will be far more sheep locally if the live trade stops? Would this not bring prices down and glut on the market?

This sounds like the gas industry.

Too bad the sheep are important

Weird industry, sounds like they are trying ensure continuing unacceptable practices

The 'industry' says that right? Tell me any industry that won't tell us change will make things more expensive. FFS. Reminds me of that old line the Libs spruiked about carbon tax and roast lamb. Do better!

That is a surprise.Meat industry threatening us all and you reporting it as fact

DearMPsBeSerious If you want chilled & frozen exports to be the main deal, why isn't it now without Government interference in the market like outlawing it? Clearly it cannot compete financially or it would already. You want change, build an abattoir out of YOUR PERSONAL money.

Before photo

Why

This is the Australian malaise in action. We have learned to believe that we should not add value because of claims of downsides. So we export unprocessed sheep, beef, iron ore, wood etc. ... where is the focus on alternate value-adding markets in this debate?

factually quite incorrect here

The farmers say they are going to exit the industry but don’t say what they will do to replace. Why? Amateur journalism.

Is this the ABC? Looks more like Murdoch’s rag.

💩

Why can’t we sell frozen lamb meat? And please don’t start bleating about how the customers can’t afford refrigerators. We sell to the Middle East. Y’know, those countries that make trillions selling oil?

You sure about that? Seems illogical. Industry beat up perhaps?

We're still waiting on Barnaby's $100 roast. 🙄

good leave sheep alone

We could live forever on their bullshit.

Who can afford it now all goes overseas they take the handouts then sell overseas

If ABC was doing itself and the community a service, you wouldn’t print this absolute garbage without fact-checking it and calling it out. Can’t wait to the management purge and a return to facts and balanced reporting.

Ordinary Aussies can’t AFFORD meat any more BLAME labour 100%

Bat a ball dummy spit from sheep farmers. If I can’t do what I want to do then I’m closing up shop.

Hook, line and sinker. This is complete BS from vested interests. Got any journos left there at the ABC?

This argument is utterly absurd! 30 years ago lamb was the cheapest meat in Australia. Then o/s corps were allowed to buy Australia's meat processing plants sending prices through the roof! Why is abc a lobbying for the live animal export lobby?

ABCFactCheck on $136 million dollar figure. It should be $92 million

Live export numbers are falling year on year. The ABC article is total crap.

Seriously? 🙄

What a load of rot. Why does the ABC buy into this lazy arsed journalism? Honestly, give it a rest. More supply into the local market should bring prices down not send them up. Many people can't afford lamb these days anyway because prices are way over the top.

Crap. Like live gas exports. We have the resource, and let the market dictate terms? And I am the crazy?

Barnaby Joyce wrote this article. ABC news has become such a joke.

Lambdust.

Is the ABC so lazy they can’t even fact check a simple story like this? Pull your finger out and do your god damn job.

Click bait with article exposed by the truth reveal at the end. What a beat up.

If it becomes unprofitable for the lamb industry to continue, good. Less animal suffering. Encourage farmers to plant based agriculture. Encourage consumers to eat less meat (nil meat consumption preferred) and consume a plant based diet.

Spin. Standard story to manage expectation, regardless. 'Lemons will cost more because of the xxxx (insert your excuse here, eg the price of fish in China).' Then bump up the prices. But don't tell the producers or they'll want a cut too.

My favourite: Rack of lamb.

Fact check.

You got Albo - so forget buying food

Small price to pay to stop that appalling cruelty.

Haven't had lamb for years, way too pricey

Why? Surely with MORE product available the price will come down? ( and don't call me Shirley)

Then don't buy lamb. We have the power.

What a load of nonsense.

Let's face it, in some way it's probably for the better.

Simple, don't eat Lambs! Save these poor little creatures from a horrible death and leave them to frolick in the fields where they belong!

Stop the fear mongering.

I don’t want live export….. we’ve seen it…. NO

Just like the gas industry and the coal industry. FoS

Sheep shit!

Have you reported on the cost of meat in this country in the last 9 years? Far out I hope there’s a sandblasted clean of the ABC and soon so we can have non partisan reporting back. So sick of Murdoch light.

Just like the lobster glut; has anyone noticed how our primary industries would rather let their product rot in landfill than reduce the price for everyday Australians?

CourtRum Oh well, I just won't buy it.

Greater supply = higher price? Mr Woody my old economics teacher would be in a brain spin!

20 million sheep and you can't buy a leg of lamb. What's wrong with our governments?

Have all ensured this and guess what... their all going up too.

Nice. So we have been priced out of beef steaks too expensive prolly increased 40% in 5 years while pay increases have been rubbish. Now we will get priced out of lamb too. There is no more 'living the Australian dream.' Beef, petrol, health insurance, house prices, elextricity

Live export paranoia is ridiculous, I've worked in the meat industry world wide and trust me, live export is the least of their problem. And they wouldn't care anyway, not too smart.

The only lamb anyone needs is Gods lamb Jesus Christ. Free gift of eternal life in heaven if you eat the lambs flesh and drink his blood by believing in him.

I will happily pay more, if that is the case, and frankly it doesn’t make sense as more would probably sold here and greater supply generally creates lower prices, but i’d rather pay more than stay silent on this cruel practice. BanLiveExports

Lamb has been expensive for years

Blah blah blah

Lambs are healthier on the paddock anyway!

It’s about time the live export industry was ended. Cash for cruelty, that’s all it is. Pity you didn’t balance out your article with an interview with a representative from vets_a_l_e. It would have been good to have science-based comments to balance out the ones based on greed

Who was the expert? Barnaby? We’ve heard that before from him. Why is the ABC indulging in this scaremongering?

Utter bollocks!

A thread about this example of lazy journalism and animal cruelty.

Bullshit

Is that from the shipping Industry, send it already killed and frozen to overseas destinations and save Australian jobs for Australian workers 🤔

CourtRum The sky is falling, the sky is falling….again

Clothes will cost more without modern day slavery, better keep that too.

Scare tactics from the live export proponents

Lolz. Too bad then lamb. 👋

Well, that's OK. I havent been able to afford a roast for ages now, infact I can't remember the last time I ate lamb. Stopping animal cruelty is worth going without lamb for longer is OK in my books.

The great Barnaby scare $80 for a leg of lamb if Labor got in last time. Rinse, repeat!

Lamb will be more expensive in Australia if we have more of it?

More woeful stenography from ABC Rural. Hard to believe that it took three 'reporters' to write this one-sided crap.

Oh FFS stop trying to sell the story that the barbaric live export trade is acceptable by filling ppls heads with fear of price increases

OMG what inane torturous logic has the ABC dutifully vomited verbatim from the Lamb industry? Completely bloody absurd.

🐂💩

No, that’s how the gas industry works.

Thanks LNP! You said that last time & it didn’t happen.

I will still be buying lamb it won’t deter me in the least

Rubbish and appalling reporting. God forbid that the abc who give us the appalling Landline crap every week, should say no to the animal ag sector when told to repeat its rhetoric and support animal cruelty. Shame on you ABC

Talking 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩

oh like gas ?! hey australia, suffer for your lack of resources as we make more money out of selling it elsewhere.

It’s the new ‘they’re taking away the weekend’…

DId you get this from Murdoch or from the LNP?

Seriously how much is live export paying you for this load of bloody stupid rhetoric. 😂😂 I’m embarrassed for you

Beat up? Bit like Barnaby’s $100 lamb roast?

Food is only for the rich anyway.

the lamb is $40 n the gas $20/hr that is our dinner

Garbage report. The live export market is barbaric, and totally unnecessary in a modern society. Instead of laziness make more jobs and profits for Australians.

Is this news or blackmail? A Morrison-style promise.

Sounds like stenographer journalism. The fact that self-serving lobbyists make outlandish claims, doesn't make them true.

But will it though? Why are you just mindlessly repeating industry talking points ThisIsNotJournalism

A few years past the phase out of live export we will look back and ask what was the hooha was about?

Did Barnaby Joyce write this?

Confusing export and the domestic market. If the export market collapses wouldn’t that mean there would be a glut of lamb in the domestic market?

That’s bull

I don’t support the cruel live export trade so I don’t care. We don’t each much lamb any more and can buy it from local farmers anyway!

Ross Gittins, June 5: '... give business whatever it demands ... so consumed by short-sighted self-interest – so used to getting its own way – that we need ... to save business from its own folly.'

I’m a vego so I don’t care. Why would anyone eat sentient beings.

Tripe.

Barnaby? Export lambs are totally different to trade (domestic kill) lambs. Export lambs are heavier. With less demand for heavy (export) lambs, one could imagine fewer lambs being fed to export weights thus a greater supply of lighter, domestic lambs.

The producers had enough warnings to clean up their industry to save it. They chose not to so it's on their own heads

That is absolute nonsense and if the whole industry is based around this practice. So be it.

Honestly haven't we heard all this before.

Would not bother us in the least. Don't eat that much meat these days anyway

Absolute nuclear horseshit! Only 7% of sheep are live exports. Doubtless it is lucrative, but it is a sadistic practice that the government is right to shut down over the next 3 years. This is David Littleproud propaganda & ABC should know better A 🧵

If there's more lamb available won't we need more gas?

Defies logic being the prices have risen on the back of international demand 🤔

Still willing to repeat drivel without getting any facts ? Amateur hour as usual. The lamb can still be exported after slaughter. If the price goes up it will have nothing to do with the exports.

Live export is barbaric regardless of what month they are shipped in.

Now you really are scraping the barrel. ThisIsNotJournalism

Anything to justify their cruelty funny thing is it’s not affordable now so keep your bullshit to your self

This is not journalism. It is nothing but a bulshit industry puff piece. And you wonder why you are losing the trust and respect of the Australian people.

Rural Tasmania - sheep farmers in area will be surprised the hear this BS.

“Industry says …” So it’s probably BS

Good. Eating less shoulders and legs of a dead sentient animal can only be a good thing.

Waltzing Matilda!

This is probably the best crock of shit you will hear the live export sheep are old weathers mostly 😡

So demand for boxed lamb and mutton is so strong and it is pushing up Australian prices but the live export sector cannot supply local demand because it would then drop prices? They profit in animal cruelty. BanLiveExports

How do you work that out?

BS - we always have 1 or 2 leg of lamb roasts / month, espec between Mar - Sept when the legs of lamb R nice & tender. A leg of lamb ( or our case a 1/2 leg as only 2 of us in the house ) is good value , the roast meal w/ baked veg + several days of cold cuts for sandwiches. +

Roast Lamb has long since stoped being an affordable staple on Aussie tables. This in nothing more that what has become the standard industry (any industry) whinge: 'give us what we want, or else'. Aussie governments give in to every vested interest so blackmail is now the norm.

I call BS

Only the ABC liberal run can bring shit like that now

Reminiscent of the HUGE spike in prawn prices when COVID stopped exports. Oh wait 🤔

Hogget and mutton taste better anyway.

Minister Chris Bowen has just told abc730 the cheapest form of energy is renewables and the most expensive is nuclear . auspoI

Lamb roast has been off the menu for a long time expensive

That's BS. If lamb was made more affordable, then local sales would increase. Same with beef. Someone is being greedy, the middle man (butcher).

Wrong.

What rubbish.

Stopping live exports will increase the prices here? What a load of crap.

Without a live export market there will be more supply in Australia which will bring the price down not up

They’re gone for many people already. Have you looked at the price of lamb lately?

The price is due to most of it being exported and us left with the crap at exorbitant prices…same as with the gas crisis

I wont buy a Lamb to roast as they are too expensive. Make them cheaper and I will purchase. So will many others.

OMG just how dumd are the comments here. Its seems if you run a business you shouldn't make money and just give product away for free.

So what- we eat less lamb. Australians need to eat less meat -we eat 3 times the global average. Better for our health, better for the environment, better for the animals. Live export is barbaric and not acceptable in modern Australia.

lobsters got cheaper

SusanLa69642683 I love lamb. But I’ve avoided it for years now bc sheep are bad for global warming. Unfortunately they are very tough on the environment and contribute to carbon production more than any other livestock. We should eat rabbit and kangaroo, veg protein, deer, and other sources.

Come on ABC stop believing the crap the LNP shovel up to you

Bullshit. I think the LSE trade is only worth about $136 million p.a. Its a piss in a dam.

Absolute crap put out by the amateur spin doctors and gleefully swallowed by the lazy ABC reporters who apparently are too tired to go and make a couple of calls to fact check. Getting sick and tired of this cheap crap from the ABC. auspol

Gone overseas

This is a load of rubbish. The ABC has become a purveyor of spin and bullshit, (not to mention sheep shit).

If I could afford lamb, I'd be rich enough to vote teal.

How? Surely more lamb available to domestic markets, get the dodgies to build more Aus based abbatoirs...

Nice bit of scaremongering ABC. Jeez you’ve set a low bar - how about a mid-year resolution to start chasing quality instead of gutter-dwelling?

DavidLeyonhjelm So my wallet surpasses animal cruelty ?

Why?

Imagine printing this story. Again.

How does this work economically? They have reduced export demand, so supply is greater. There will be a rebalancing of price yes, but I can't see how it will necessarily increase.

Local supply goes up so price goes up? That's not how things work.

DavidLeyonhjelm

DavidLeyonhjelm

If this was 32 years ago, it might have been Naomi Watts who married Tom Cruise

Go vegan. Just don't eat animals

Farming industry are trying to have Australians believe that live shipment of sheep ( not suitable for local markets) is subsiding the market prices for lamb ! 😂😂 how benevolent of the farmers

So be it if farmers choose other sources of revenue then fine, however prices get too high the risk of consumers choosing other products will sort things out

You’ll have nothing, and you’ll be grateful.

Live export might be great for the producer, but it's garbage for anyone else. Including the towns near their farms.

Prefer chicken or steak, just sayin'.

Bullshit. Have a look at the beef prices. Moved to an area that has a local lamb supply and a decent butcher. It's perfect value for money when he cuts a piece off a larger leg and it has limited bone. Beef on the other hand forget it for price.

PATHETIC. DID DAN TEHAN AND HIS GRAZIER MATES PUT YOU UP TO THIS? fearmongering threats propaganda livesheepexport cruelty

So farmers are going to stop farming sheep are they? Will they go into lettuces instead?

Lies, a side of lamb cost $20 before live export, killed Aussie slaughter houses....

Fine. Moving on to the global pandemic and climate crisis.

I’m glad that live export are stopped! And seriously this industry sounds like the LNP where there is only way one to do things!!!

How on earth do they work that out? It’s a total crock of shit.

Times change, and if the industry can't keep up the local supply of meat without the cruelty of the live export trade, then so be it. People adapted to living without turtle soup, and they'll adapt to living without roasted lambs.

I wonder how the NZ sheep industry has survived without live exports?

Yes and new gas wells will mean cheaper energy for all Australians...bla bla bla...just shut down this evil empire already.

shouldn't it come down in price? More flooding the Aussie market should lower the price....

Newsflash: EVERYTHING COST MORE RIGHT NOW.

Make it Cheaper in AU first, get Australians to buy it again as its been ridiculously priced for too long. Make it more affordable, more Australian Homes will buy it which will cover for some of the export business lost.

JFC! Do we have to go through this bullshit again?! Gone are the days of a useful ABC.

Industry says.🙄get real ABC. You are becoming more murdochy daily

If that’s the price you pay for the end to a cruel, exploitatively lazy process then so be it. It doesn’t deserve to exist. No taxpayer money should flow to these people. Ever again.

Our local captured markets subsidizes overseas prices and marketing for exporters. Maybe if you valued your local market more. Wonder what prices would be if we allowed unregulated food exports into this country.🤔

Fear fear fear... sell it locally cheaper and you will sell more... this is just pure fucking greed and the media backs them in... the ABC is dead

We have to keep live exporting our lettuce, or things could get real silly.🤔

I smell some real bullshit behind this.

To use a well-known agricultural term: bullshit. Either you sell lamb for what people want to pay or you don't. It's called 'market forces'.

I don't slaughter my own lamb..plus it's forbidden on my tenancy agreement

So by that logic, sending more gas overseas should make gas in Australia cheaper!

Eat less. Many are overweight in Australia

Yeah, because lamb cutlets currently at $48 kg are such a steal. What a joke. He's selling his flock of 8,000 sheep. That's not even a drop in the bucket in terms of total flock numbers, and IF the domestic price rises (and there's NO reason for it to) other will raise prod'n.

😂😂 Find a new business, yours model is not working. You know the one where you sell your product for less to overseas markets than domestically. Oops I am wrong. That is how the LNG industry operates. Lol

Lol, like we aren't already. Quite happy to remove Lamb from my diet, overrated anyway. Beef, chicken fish etc, great sources of tge protein we need without all the extra fat.

Why wasn’t this a serious election issue?! Life without lamb roast is unthinkable. . .

How stupid with more lamb sold here the price should drop.

why can't we have an expanded slaughter, packing & export industry in Australia ? I don't favour killing & eating animals but to be practical, I'd like to lessen their suffering amap. I advocate small, local processing businesses & efficient transport The_Nationals.

Good thing we got rid of that carbon tax and the lamb roast dropped from $100

Yes, we don't just want to butcher our lamb, we want to torture them as well!

Bullshit.

“We want to continue being unspeakably cruel to animals so we can keep your lamb roast cheaper” Right. That makes complete sense.

This commentary is up there with Beetrorter's claims that carbon pricing would lead to $100 lamb roasts.....only even more self-serving.

That makes no sense at all. We aren't shipping lambs off for processing then importing them back

What a load of utter shite. The land barons who profit most from live export will do *anything* to avoid creating local jobs.

Lamb has been expensive for the last 5 years. Removing a major buyer should reduce prices if anything. Longer term, flock will decrease. Local processing capacity is maintained and equilibrium will return

Total BS, the market rule is, that if there is a shortage the price goes up, so if there is a Glut of Mutton on the Market the price will fall !!!

NZ abolished live exports and their lamb prices weren’t materially affected, so if a stale pale white guy wants to wave their finger and lecture consumers it won’t out well for him and his industry

When greedy farmers exploit and instill fear..

🤔 ummm … hmmm

BS

Just another form of the drug dealers’ defence.

Doesn't affect me at all. Stop killing animals for 'food'.

Please consider the 20% of the population that is vegan or vegetarian when preparing images for stories like this. It’s deeply offensive to have to see it.

Is it 1986? If there was ever a story presented by the ABC to provide proof of how detached and irrelevant it had become, it would be hard to go past this.

Don’t eat meat. 😏

How can that possibly be ?

Nah, lamb roast off the menu years ago as are lamb chops and certain cuts of steak so stop with the bullshit notion re live exports!

Middle class mumbling.

Ummm hate to burst your bubble but we seldom have roast meats at home now with the kids & the reason for that is nutritional science & nothing to do with the live export trade. Just say’n ….

Recalling Barnaby's $100 lamb roast. Australia could have developed a profitable halal-certified packaged lamb meat industry. That was scotched by certain political and industry players in favour of live exports. Get real, ABC.

Worth it

For once maybe the interests of big industry shouldn’t be put above all else

Garbage. It won't make one bit of difference to the prices here. They've been rising steadily anyway. All meat prices in Australia are ridiculous as it is. It's exactly the same as Gas. We're paying top dollar for items we mass produce while the World pays Less.

$45 Check with Abbot

Oh no! Not the roast! We'd better torture some animals to fix this. ABC mates I thought you just sucked for the election but you're really keeping fine form. Clean out the news team please.

You mean I'll have to go without a lamb roast if the industry can't be cruel to animals. I think I'm ok with that.

banLiveExport Is the abc independent or a mouthpiece for private industry? AnimalCruelty

Typical Australia, how the hell do we have to pay more if we can’t export Wouldn’t that mean there’s more here to process which would mean a large supply which would mean cheaper lamb In the end just don’t buy it too dear..

I've been slow cooking lamb fore quarter chops because I'm single and on a pension for years.... geez I remember the 80's and $10 would buy a leg of lamb

This story doesn’t make sense. Saying lamb prices will go through the roof while a couple of paragraphs later quoting local consumption is falling drastically. As far as I’m aware live export is older sheep, why would that impact domestically processed lamb?

This is illogical and not worth running as a story. Journalists are supposed to ask “does the public need to know this?” not “do vested interests need the public to think this?”.

Is this ABC News or Sky News? I can't tell anymore. Or maybe Barnaby has a new gig. Please stop.

What a rubbish story. Factually full of holes and propaganda. I practically hear bananaby in the background wobbling his arms around about a $100 lamb roast.

My single mum used to be able to have cutlets on the menu every week back in the 80’s/90’s - my two income family treats ourselves to them when they’re on discount only.

Is that the same as gas?

We should be eating baby sheep anyway.

rubbish a story pulled from a 10 year old archive and tweeked to fit today

“Farewell to the weekend” “No more lamb roast” The practice of stirring up selfish mendacity to counter cruel and destructive operations is a revolting media response. It doesn’t engender support but disgust. auspol

If that’s the cost of getting doing away with cruelty to animals so be it.

This is where we're suppposed to believe supply and demand works in reverse too. The real truth is, we'll just continue not buying lamb because it was too expensive *with* live sheep export.

stop the fear

Rubbish

Can you stop using the 2019 figure of $136 million for sheep exports as well. It is wrong you know it is, the current figure is $92 million. Do some research.

Really! Where have you been? Prices are already high. This is nothing but a desperate attempt to gain support for the live export trade. Rolling out Matt from Thomas Elders who supports live export is a tad desperate. Labor already said nothing happening until next term.

More second rate businesses blaming everything but their own poor business model and lack of adaptability.

No live exports means more sheep stay in Australia. If the supply and demand market is working my lamb roast will be cheaper.

Whoever writes your Twitter headlines is either closely associated with the LNP or just came across from Sky. I'm pretty sure the days of a lamb roast won't be 'gone' when the live export trade is phased out... eventually... ThisIsNotJournalism

If this industry needs to participate in animal cruelty to remain viable, maybe it shouldn't remain viable.

Has anybody been able to source, or if found afford to buy mutton/hogget. Let the good times return.

Honestly anyone who can afford a lamb roast these days will pay more for it anyway. Live exports really a bit of an excuse to jack up prices. It’s ok to put animals at harm thru live exports but not ok for asylum seekers to seek refugee status! Irony!!!

Have you seen the price of a crumbed cutlet lately? It’s been cheaper to buy a pre cooked chook or pork for quite a few years.

I’m ok with that.

Just the start of many left wing policies seemingly popular before the election but far less so when it actually impacts people negatively.

Well, lamb has been stupidly expensive for some time now. Hardly a new thing.

The days of a lamb roast have been over for a number of years for a lot of families

Prices of everything have skyrocketed since Labor took office when they promised to lower cost of living, they must act and put their plan into effect immediately to bring prices down
