MBPG said many locals who showed interest wanted to operate a stall in a safe location.

MBPG mayor Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman said there were presently four sites in Pasir Gudang, namely Jalan Sena Taman Rinting, Jalan Balau Taman Sierra Perdana, Jalan Belatuk Taman Scientex and Jalan Merbah Taman Scientex.

“There was an increase in the number of ‘instant’ petty traders during the Covid-19 pandemic, but as the situation improves, the number has slowly decreased and those who remain are the ones who are really passionate about running a business. “Those interested can apply for a licence at the MBPG office and we will decide where they should operate,” said Asman Shah.

“We want to relocate them from the roadside to somewhere safer, as the presence of roadside stalls may cause traffic congestion and road accidents in some places,” he said, adding that the designated trading sites were more strategic and help could easily be provided in the event of an emergency. “Now that the economic situation has improved, it is time for the council to go to the ground and ensure that only those registered are operating,” he said.

“This can be introduced slowly as some of them may not have the immediate financial capability to make any changes.Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang Tourism Association president Fauzi Faizal said these places had the potential to be a tourism product in the city.
