With regulators cracking down on emissions of methane, and more investors clamoring for companies to prove their sustainable bonafides, oil and gas executives are lining up to get their natural gas wells certified as having minimum methane emissions.

Methane escaping from an oil storage tank is captured with an infrared camera. Firms that certify natural gas as low-methane don’t use such technologies and undereport emissions, critics say.was still a novelty, a small Colorado firm aimed at certifying the state’s natural gas operations as low on methane emissions and generally environmentally friendly.

“The momentum is growing. We now have clients in every major oil and gas basin in the United States,” he said. “Will there be a market for non-certified gas in five years? Probably, but I predict it will sell at a discount.” What might sound like the overly optimistic statements of a startup CEO reflect an incredible surge in natural gas certification over the past two years. Through the first five months of 2022, some 20 billion cubic feet of U.S. natural gas has been certified as low on methane emissions, primarily from gas fields along the Appalachian Mountains and the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana and Texas, where burning off excess gas, or flaring, is minimal, according to analysis by S&P Global Platts.

“Within basically a year, we’re already at 20 percent of U.S. gas production being certified,” said Eunji Oh, an analyst at the research firm Wood Mackenzie. “ are focusing not just on the domestic market but are looking to expand to international markets, particularly Europe. We haven’t seen from the Asian countries yet, but I would expect some to emerge soon.”

Granholm: We Want Oil and Gas Companies 'to Diversify' to Produce Clean EnergyOn Wednesday's broadcast of CNN's 'New Day,' Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm stated that the Biden administration wants oil and gas companies to increase production now but also to 'become diversified energy companies, to be able to produce other means of clean energy.' | Clips Because voting with their wallets has worked so well that we're paying $7 for gas. Nope If it were that easy and they could make more money with green energy, we would all be using nothing but green energy already. It's not easy. it's not efficient. It only survives because of subsidies and does more damage to the earth in the long run than fossil fuels.
