Jim and Rich Oliver have been coming to work at their family meat market on Denver’s Sixth Avenue for nearly 50 years now. They started out sweeping floors sometime in junior high, for maybe $1 an hour, if memory serves them. But the brothers don’t spend too much time these days reminiscing about the past or even worrying about the future, for that matter.
Over the past year, Oliver’s saw more customers as restaurants closed and larger grocery stores’ stocks dwindled. Here they are, at the corner of Sixth and Williams, six days a week from 6 or 7 in the morning until 7 at night, after closing. Oliver’s has always been a landmark along Sixth Avenue, though it’s lived at three locations within a mile stretch of its current location.
