Former competition watchdog chief Graeme Samuel says business leaders should be more vocal in the housing crisis conversation.

A report commissioned by HAA, by SGS Economics and Planning, warns that the cost to taxpayers in today’s dollars will hit $25 billion annually by 2050 if nothing is done to improve access to affordable housing.

MinterEllison chief executive Virginia Briggs said she joined the fight against homelessness after being exposed to the problem as a long-time property lawyer. Over the same period, the nation’s population had risen 25 per cent, placing added stress on an already stretched housing market, HAA said. “The Australian business community needs to ensure that there is well-located affordable housing for workers, and in doing so, restore hope and confidence in the homeownership aspirations of our younger generations.”
