Critics are running out of superlatives to describe Liam McElhinney's seductive Lowestoft pinots made from Tasmanian fruit, writes Sky News Australia Wine and Travel Editor Des Houghton.

Introducing Liam McElhinney from Marlborough in New Zealand, who seems to have won more gold medals in recent years than our Commonwealth Games swimmers.

Weeks earlier he was handed the trophy for the grand champion wine of show at the Royal Queensland Wine Awards with Lowestoft 2021 Single Vineyard Woodlands Pinot Noir. He won the James Halliday trophy for the best pinot at last year’s Melbourne Wine Show with the same wine. McElhinney’s Lowestoft pinot also took out top gong at the Royal Hobart Show.As a contract winemaker, McElhinney made OSSA Wines 2020 Pinot Noir that won the Australian Pinot Noir Challenge for 2021.The win was more remarkable because it was the fledgling wine company’s first release.

The magnificent property rests on Berriedale peninsula on the banks of the Derwent River and overlooks MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art. There are many fine Tasmanian pinots to sample as I discovered on a recent trip there. The wine and tourism industries go hand in hand and there are some lovely cellar doors with restaurants.
