Mariano De Marinis was cleared after an Ontario Superior Court judge ruled the complainant was an unreliable, untrustworthy witness.

But this past week in a resounding acquittal, De Marinis, 37, was cleared after Ontario Superior Court Justice Robyn Ryan Bell ruled that the complainant — a 19-year-old bar trainee at the time — was an unreliable, untrustworthy witness.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

After flirtatious texts between the woman and De Marinis in 2015, the bar manager was accused of sexually assaulting a drunk trainee in the washroom, but the judge cleared him after analyzing the evidence. The complainant also testified she felt coerced by De Marinis to drink on the job, but the judge ruled otherwise.

Another glaring inconsistency was that the woman who wanted to kill herself testified that she left a suicide note citing De Marinis as the reason. The Court of Appeal for Ontario ruled the trial judge made a serious legal error by accusing De Marinis of “tailoring” his testimony to evidence he knew the Crown would present.

Man, 24, charged in connection with ByWard Market shootingA 24-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with multiple weapons-related offences in connection with a shooting incident in the ByWard Market on Thanksgiving… You can bet that this criminal does not obey any firearms laws and the gun was illegally obtained. Yet liberals still think punishing law abiding hunters and sports shooters for their hobby is the answer for gun crime. Ignorance is bliss. The Citizen published Daudi Bago’s name and picture in 2008 when he was a member of the Royal Ritchie Drummers…but not in 2022 after Bago shot up the market. Gutsy journalism right there.
