Treasurer Jim Chalmers will consider increasing tax on gas companies and has kept the door open to imposing price caps as part of a mandatory code of conduct for the industry, as the government faces mounting pressure to intervene to get power prices under control.
The government went to the election promising to lower the average household power bill by $275 a year by 2025 – an all-but-abandoned commitment seized on by the opposition, but Labor defended the price modelling as pre-dating the energy crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. If there are other ways that we can do this responsibly, which takes into consideration our international partners, the contracts that have been signed and a whole bunch of other competing pressures, then we are prepared to do that.Energy minister Chris Bowen said the government would act “decisively and carefully” to address rising power prices, but added that it was taking the time to ensure it had the right policy settings.
LisaVisentin Try threatening to Nationalise the industry
LisaVisentin We need to establish our emergency fuel storage here in Australia (West and East) rather than pay an undisclosed storage fee to the USA!! Bowenchris AlboMP
LisaVisentin Windfall tax. Why are we not taxing these companies on their record profits
LisaVisentin The PRRT is already a super profits tax. Applying higher taxes won’t bring gas prices down… it will be passed on to consumers.
LisaVisentin Here we go, ALP are going to start taxing everyone..
LisaVisentin More so, the Govt. should impose a full ban on exporting gas needed here,+ taxing those Co's which do a much export tax. The Govt. also needs to impose a public ownership tax on all mining Co's. What lies below the surface so deeply cannot be viewed as owned by mining companies.3
LisaVisentin Might need to change the way foreign based companies are taxed. Maybe tax sales revenue or pre overseas distribution revenue.
LisaVisentin And watch the price rises when we import it back.
LisaVisentin Consider? What's to consider?
LisaVisentin Mark McGowan has the right idea!
LisaVisentin Why not just nationalise our resources? Why the hell do we allow foreign multinationals to control our sovereign natural resources?
LisaVisentin Tax avoidance by the multinationals, they should pay a revenue tax.
LisaVisentin Plus the Top 150 companies in Australia like Apple, Exon, Microsoft, Packer,Fox, and so on, Do Not Pay Any Tax
LisaVisentin They should take back control or All our resources like Norway there's the model right there just do that.
LisaVisentin .... finally !
LisaVisentin He won’t raise taxes on his donors. Only workers get slugged under Labor.
