“Bureaucratic Red Tape” to Blame After St. John’s Shuts Down Seasonal Business, says Owners

Two local business owners have been dealt a significant blow by the city of St. John’s after their seasonal business venture was shut down due to what they call “bureaucratic red tape.”Last year they opened up a seasonal venture, the Christmas House, at a property next door. However, they say the location was not accessible and about two and a half months ago they started eyeing the front end of the nearby Brookfield Factory.

Ivy says they didn’t have a physical copy of that permit at the time, but remained in constant contact with the city. Greg says they have all the permits in place, but without a physical copy they couldn’t order the inspections to go with it, and thus the city has shut them down over safety concerns.

This is absolutely terrible!! SHAME on CityofStJohns

the citizens of St John's got the fookin' clown show of a city council they DESERVED! Now live with the scumbags you elected.

Who's shocked that St John's caused a business to shut down due to red tape, again

City Council; 'Oo0o0ooo ye ok, Give us money' (^ an old, formally historic building, left to rot otherwise) Also City Council; 'NoT ThAt WaY ThOoOo0o' 🤡👄🤡 (^ at the expense of literally /hundreds/ of local artists, right before Christmas no less..)

Every other business can’t open without safety regulations in place - they shouldn’t be an exempt

On one hand officials say, we are hear to support small business, but how is this so. We simply gotta make it work and not be looking for ways to hinder Small Business. Official need to be proactive in administering rules and regulations and not Reactive. Red Tpae is a poorexcuse

I would *never* open a B&M business in St. John's. Snowmageddon showed their true colors. SJ city hall is the most anti-small business entities in the country.

Must have tried to put up a Christmas tree 🎄. GalwayLiving

That business supports ~400 vendors across the province and are bringing life to a part of the city that is essentially a dead zone. Somehow the City of St. John’s are managing to find a way to shag it up.

I think it is more to this story than what we are hearing .

Oh look the city of St. John’s screwing over small businesses… shocker… I’m sure Mount Pearl, Paradise or CBS would have them. All those small businesses screwed.. over paperwork..

Once again the City of St. John’s is helping small business expand and succeed. This city is the best. NOT!!!!

Yet the city spends $100,000 of tax payers dollars on the Pedestrian mall every month it's in operation, feathering the pockets of some well to do bar and restaurant owners, but this place can't open?

For 99% of these cases, you don't get to hear the full story.

This is just ridiculous! Come on City of St. John’s and fix this mess!!

Are we sure it’s not a Hudson & Rex set?

Sounds like failure to comply with applicable rules and regulations that are in place to protect the public and increase accessibility.

Again, the City displays its incompetence. Even if they had the physical permit in hand, the city inspectors wouldn’t show up for inspections for weeks. They are very quick at issuing vacate property and stop work orders though🤔

Why don't the City focus more on shutting down illegal Sex Parlours like Hush, Red Room, The Studio, where they claim to be Licensed Adult Massage studios, yet nothing but pure sex brothels.

Seems there is more to this story than what we are being told. For instance if this was approved by council, why did the owners wait over a week to get the permit and why didnt council allow time for the safety inspection.

Such a shame! The city needs to try harder to support local instead of just suggesting people support local.

This is absurd. City of St Johns is showing once again how it is not a friend of small business. This pop up was sensational last year. Shameful

No matter where you turn in this province - east, west, north south, urban, rural - the people in charge are letting down the everyday person. I am so sick & tired of this place. Honestly, the people 'in power' in this province could not run a church hall bingo!

Move to business friendly mount pearl

Honestly, these people are doing SO much for small businesses and entrepreneurs in NL, this is shameful.

Well this is fantastic! I totally agree with them 😑 Bunch of sleveens. I walks past this place almost every day and I was excited to go in, because from what I could see - what they had then - was gorgeous.

Dobie_Daddy Hopefully I'm missing some important information and context here. Otherwise, this is reprehensible.

So sad , they are very nice people who are trying to revive an old abandoned building.

Between 2016 and 2022 16 breweries opened in NL. Only one was in the largest population centre in the province, St John's. That town doesn't want new things

Never seen a province work so hard to make everything that should work, fail. Small town, or city, doesn’t matter.

Holy shit. CityofStJohns will throw up every roadblock possible to ensure your business demise.

City is not business friendly

A municipality’s expertise indeed. Any municipality
