Brightline wants to wrap up work on the project — currently 86% complete — by the middle of next year. “Late summer is ideal, but that requires a whole lot of elements to come online," Kefauver said.
The service already is running empty trains on the tracks on some segments in Brevard County and will continue testing once construction work is complete, Brightline will work with the Federal Railroad Administration on the testing and other reviews prior to the start of service. Some segments are nearing construction completion for the route. For instance, a segment between Orlando International Airport to Cocoa along Beachline Expressway/SR 528 that includes 42 miles of new track is expected to be done between January or February. The other segment where work is ongoing is between Cocoa and West Palm Beach, including 129 miles of track that currently has 91% of its railroad crossings done and 24 out of 28 bridges completed.
The station at Orlando International Airport is expected to be completed in January, with furnishings delivered by February. That area has 37,350 square feet of space. Trains would take roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes to go between Orlando and Miami. The company says that, including its South Florida stations, the system has a value of more than $4.5 billion. It plans to open stations in Aventura and Boca Raton on the existing South Florida corridor this year.
