Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy calls on the liquor industry to 'step up' and help clamp down on alcohol-fuelled violence in Central Australia.

The Northern Territory already has some of the tightest alcohol regulations in the country.

Licensed grocery stores — excluding Coles and Woolworths — are also required to cap their liquor sales so that they do not exceed 25 per cent of total sales. Mr Vatskalis said ratepayers were forking out "an arm and a leg" for the council to clean up broken glass and other alcohol-related damage every year.He said the alcohol industry could do more to curb the crisis by reducing opening hours at bottle shops and employing their own liquor inspectors at retailers across the territory.

Most of the trouble is that courts are only giving slap on wrist type sentences. Police need to toughen up and courts need to back them with appropriate sentences.

Why should the alcohol industry suffer because the oldest culture can control their own problems

It's easier to find and deal with violence caused by alcohol on the streets. It's harder to spot problems caused by drinking behind closed doors.

Great

Since most of the perps are aboriginal children, has she considered raising the legal drinking age to 18? Why should adult White people pay a penalty?

So, the problem is, Aboriginals just want to drink themselves to oblivion, all day, every day, on tax payer money. How can we change that? What can we offer them in place of alcohol? Is it even POSSIBLE to break this cycle? 🤔🤷‍♂️

Hang on.our one track mind minister LindaBurneyMP and AlboMP are waiting for the voice referendum to listen to anyone on how to solve this. So be patient. We will need to have a 100million dollar department to give us advise on these issues soon. No knee jerk reactions plz

If it is suppose to be a catastrophe in Alice Springs then shut the sale of alcohol down until a solution is sort. Aboriginal people are not the problem. The whole community is.

If you are proposing that idea, it should be Australia wide for everyone, to avoid discrimination.

People need medication if that's the plan to force them to be sober. You need doctors on the ground to help now AlboMP you can't just listen to the far right and ban grog and not provide support. Women will end up harmed even more.

This is a joke. You are asking alcohol companies to resolve peoples addictions and terrible behaviour. How about people for once take responsibility for their actions. Put them in jail. AlboMP should be providing more police so they can handle everything.

Are all the kids that are running amok, breaking in and destroying peoples homes and small businesses drunk on alcohol?

Seems that no amount of taxpayer $'s going to various initiatives to help the indigenous communities is working by the looks of things! Don't take this the wrong way, but why cant these communities make something of themselves just like the millions of migrants have upon arriving

That’s racist

If there was some way to limit the percentage of dole etc people could spend on alcohol you'd think the government would jump at the idea. Does anyone know of such a brilliant method?

They hate us with a passion but they want us to sort out their shit…..

There should be higher Taxes on All types of Alcohol just like Cigarettes to reduce it's use not just in NT. We in Australia have a lot bigger trouble with Alcohol with regards to the various health issues which the government & industry don't play up as much as on cigarettes.

Free the Weed!

Ah, Senator, I believe sorting crime out is not the job of business! As a Senator that’s your job! You do something about it! Would possibly be of great assistance to you if you hopped off your high horse?

Can someone ELI5 ... doesn't NT have an elected government, and a police force? Are they all getting paid to do SFA? Why does the PM need to do their job for them?

Why not create more for people to do? So that then they have an alternative to getting drunk? I mean they are in the ass end of nowhere. Set up mentoring groups, create spaces for them like skate parks, create vocational training positions for them that match their interests etc.

How about, get stuffed... Private businesses are not babysitters.

When I was last in Darwin you had to present your license when purchasing takeaway alcohol. Has this changed

We do need to get on top of this . Curb the alcohol related violence and destruction But simply banning alcohol won't fix systemic issues , nor will building 200 million dollars of infrastructure ( LindaBurneyMP ) We need to invest in people amd create opportunities

Alcohol is the worlds most dangerous drug because it has social sanction. It doesn't leave the blood so easily as it morphs with it. This is why people get the highs and lows . Lots of fresh water in time gets it out of the system.

That racism, let them keep drinking. The all wise elders will fix this. You have to stop drinking on your own terms to really quit. Being told not to drink makes you want to drink more.

How very racist of this labor senator!

If excessive alcohol is a big part of the problem then why not ban it?

Where’s all the health professionals? 34 health experts come out against e-cigarettes but not alcohol? So absolutely no integrity to public health.

Yeah ! I can see what is brewing here, Labor takes away an inactive that was actually working, now they will want to restrict alcohol for everyone. Another fine Labor mess !

No offence, but asking a private, profit driven business, to cut down on sales, without legislative backing, is not going to happen. Especially as most of the people who would be affected are Indigenous, and there has been a push to identify such actions as racist. Australia

If we really gave a shit about the problems we have with alcohol. We would have banned alcohol at Parliament House after the Brittany Higgins saga. Did I tell you I got my own AlboMP beer? LOL voteno VoiceToParliament auspol

If only there was a cashless credit card that could be issued? 🤔

Stop giving them cash.

Late to the party as usual, Senator? Shamed into it?

Alice Springs police colluding with LNP to sponsor unrest like Sudanese mob violence VIC 2018 election and antivaxers 2022 Federal election.

we had cashless card but Albo dumped it as a grand gesture of Labor's leftist politic Now they want the sellers to limit the sales It is shifting responsibility

More like lining the pockets of the leaders

Obviously, the NT govt can't control the crime. The federal govt refuses to help. I guess their only option is to get companies to fix it. I am not confident that's going to happen. NT might have to go the same way as the US with armed vigilantes if the govt won't help. 🤔

It’s addressing the root problem tho..which is unemployment and centuries of indigenous mistreatment….

This is the same senator who campaigned for the grog ban to be lifted and is now trying desperately to backpedal as kids suffer

Senator Malarndirri McCarthy, is an indigenous aboriginal member of NT parliament, as a leader of the community where has she been all this time and why is nobody listening to her?

Makes sense

This is a bit rich after the Labor party removed alchohol restrictions because they claimed they were racist.
