Outgoing CEO Andrè de Ruyter is leaving Eskom with immediate effect, the power utility said late on Wednesday night.
The outgoing CEO had on Tuesday given a wide-ranging interview on e.tv's My Guest Tonight with Annika Larsen, where he lamented law enforcement's response to criminal acts at the power utility, adding that there were"acts of treason" occurring"on a daily basis" and that"state security are missing in action".
He anticipated that it would go even lower by the weekend as more capacity is returned to the grid. As things stood on Monday afternoon, 3 766MW of capacity was out on planned maintenance, there was"huge" full load losses of 12 318MW and partial losses of 5 993MW.The demand for evening is forecast to be 27 282MW, with a shortfall of 5 834MW of capacity, necessitating Stage 6.
What De Ruyter is referring to is Eskom's request to bypass the flue-gas desulphurisation. By doing so, Eskom could return the units to operation a year earlier than if it first connected"There is a coal stockpile at Lethabo. It is just very wet." Chief Nuclear Officer Keith Featherstone said the cause of the Koeberg unit 1 trip was still being investigated. It still counts as"human error", but it was anticipated with the work that was needed to be done.
"Further, two generating units at the Lethabo Power Station were shut down due to coal constraints as the New Vaal Mine that is supplying the station has been unable to deliver the expected amount of coal during the past week because of the heavy rains. This is to"create space to replenish the emergency generation reserves," the power utility's spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said.There is still the possibility that Stage 6 load shedding might again be implemented during Sunday night, Mantshantsha added.In an update on Saturday morning Eskom said that Unit 2 of Koeberg power station had tripped the night before. This occurred while the replacement of a failed electronic turbine protection module was under way.
