Insider tells the global tech, finance, markets, media, healthcare, and strategy stories you want to know.

Recently, Tesla has hinted at some face-lifts for the Model 3 and the Model Y. Sam Fiorani, an automotive analyst for AutoForecast Solutions, described them as overdue. As Tesla tries to move more and more cars, he argued, refreshing their designs will become a critical piece of the business.

As if that wasn't enough, Tesla's losing its grip on the novelty of the way it sells cars. The company decided from the start to eschew the dealership model and sell its cars directly to customers, giving Tesla more control over pricing and therefore an edge over its legacy competitors on profit per vehicle. But competitors are finding a way to keep their dealers — long protected by an intricate web of franchise laws in the US — and beat Tesla at its own game.

One of the clearest signs that a carmaker is facing serious issues is oversupply. Cars can languish on lots for plenty of reasons that may sound familiar: Customers are underwhelmed by designs, other automakers have rolled out some hot new tech, or the brand's reputation has been damaged. Tesla — which once had toits assembly plant in Fremont, California, in a chaotic attempt to meet customers' overwhelming demand — long seemed immune to this problem.

"We're seeing Tesla fall into these traps all the automakers go down eventually, and it all really started with the rental sales," Ivan Drury, an automotive analyst for the car-shopping site Edmunds, said in an interview with InsiderAs Teslas started stacking up and the company's edge started to slip, Musk lost focus. Last spring, the billionaire became increasingly obsessed with a takeover of Twitter.

Hey NoraNaughton how long ago did you write this article. 🥴🥴

oh jfc - Tesla's only edge was that it made EVs & was bought by Elon. That's it. 1 trick pony. Was always going to happen that competition would come.

It must have been hard for you to pull together so much misinformation and put it all in one place. FUD FUD FUD. If you would like to know what is actually happening, Lars has his finger on the pulse.

Nope. TESLA is here to stay

NoraNaughton Tesla has only increased its edge and Elon Musk is to thank! Your article won’t age well in the face of the continued growth of Tesla’s innovation along with its TAM. Elon Musk is Rockefeller + Henry Ford in one and Tesla will define the Industrial Revolution 2.0.

When the left worshipped this guy you buried any negative stories or customer complaints about tesla .now if someone get in accident their fault it’s global news ..slamming every way u can. more proof of the leftist machine brainwashing at every turn . Elon is not a conservative

this has to be the most inept article

I'll just put it here. Before claiming Tesla lost its edge, tell me what other car company sells cars that can drive themselves 37 miles from the streets of SF to Palo Alto without any human input? Mercedes L3 you mentioned is a joke - doesn't work anywhere and no one uses it.

This article might be more believable if Business insider hadn't been writing anti-Elon practically every day since he took over Twitter. I get it, you disagree with him politically, but how about you evaluate Tesla without thinking about Elon and getting upset?

Elon Musk has pushed his self-driving initiative too hard at Tesla when I rather see the 'driving test' become harder. It is too easy to become a licensed driver when it should be difficult. We would have far fewer accidents. Tesla complaints? You can't please everybody in life.

Long article to read. Tesla hasn't lost their edge, but we have been in a difficult time in the past 3 years. The company has handled it better than the other automakers. Cars have been dynamically priced, so don't complain too much if prices drop. Be happy with what you got.

Lol no. You're just pathetically ad sponsored by GM and Ford, while Tesla refuse to send you a dollar. And keeps outcompeting them

Nah Tesla hasn’t lost its edge. Imo even though it’s the most “apple to apple” comparison, range isn’t the proper metric for EVs. If you test drive a ModelY,then test drive any other EV it’s clear that the FSD pits the Tessie years ahead of it’s nearest competitor. FactsNotFanBoy

Have you read this nonsense Teslaconomics hikingskiing SawyerMerritt elonmusk ? tsla
