Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines will create an industry of more than 10,000 workers, with the head of the AUKUS taskforce warning that failing to find the manpower to build, operate, maintain and oversee the submarines looms as the biggest risk to its success.
Construction of the now axed French-designed $90 billion submarine project was expected to generate 5000 jobs. Vice Admiral Mead said the nuclear submarine industry would be more than double that figure.“Easily more than 10,000 people are needed. These are really exciting career pathways.” Establishing and staffing the regulatory system to provide oversight and monitor safeguards of the submarines was also crucial.
“Right now there is a 15-year-old at school, hopefully she is studying STEM, and will one day be commanding officer of one of nuclear-powered submarines. Her peers will be engineers or logisticians on a submarine. Some of her friends may work in the shipyard or design authority or here in Canberra in headquarters or maybe over in Western Australia as we operate these submarines.”
