With car thefts spiking in Colorado the past few years, three auto insurance carriers are now declining to cover certain vehicles, leaving at-risk owners with fewer options.

Allstate, State Farm and Progressive are passing over new owners of some Kia and Hyundai vehicles, as thieves steal those cars at higher rates. In 2021, Colorado heldin the nation for motor vehicle thefts – and those rates continued to skyrocket in the first half of last year, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Association.

It’s a nationwide trend, with recordings uploaded from Milwaukee, Atlanta, Memphis and other cities. Last year, when the stolen Kia they were riding in rolled over. Authorities presume the teens were participating in the social media challenge. Debbie McClung parks her 2017 Kia Sportage at her home on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. McClung said the car had been stolen twice, and her husband had foiled another would-be thief. For 70-year-old Debbie McClung, the financial blow of car theft is outweighed by the psychological toll. The Green Valley Ranch resident suffered three car thefts over the past year and a half.

In July 2022, she finished a shopping trip at the Town Center at Aurora, and realized her car was stolen again. After it reappeared, McClung was forced to wait weeks to use her vehicle, which was impounded as criminal evidence. McClung acknowledges that she’s in a better position than most theft victims, with good insurance, rental coverage and the means to buy another vehicle, if necessary. But she’s read countless anecdotes about uninsured and undocumented Coloradans left without their cars, hindering their ability to drive to work, school and the doctor’s office.

Allstate decided to pause new coverage of select Kia and Hyundai model years in certain states, including Colorado, “due to unusually high theft risk,” said spokesperson Tanya Robinson.

My union rep told me that 18 cars have been stolen at DEN since March 1st when the airport moved the employee lot to former passenger lot Mt Elbert. A friend of mine had his stolen on Saturday from that lot.

heidiganahl THANKS DEMOCRATS for emboldening criminals, being Soros supporters, not prosecuting or making penalties higher, letting criminals out of jail to offend again and again - thanks Democrats! VOTE REPUBLICAN REMOVE THESE INCOMPETENT BLOW HARDS WHO ARE ABSOLUTE FAILURES to Denver

Alot of armed patriots in Colorado Springs, they don't get messed with as much

Good job, Polis.

heidiganahl Democrat blue leadership at its best

heidiganahl Anywhere leftism goes, crime follows.

When you steal a car and are charged with a minor infraction by the judge, why not steal again?

Imagine my shock.

The democrat utopia Polis has created in Colorado really sucks. Can we do some law and order again to end it?

Just make the car owners pay more for being a high risk.

You can thank your hard blue leadership for this terrible reality.

Don't drive.

Ah the beauty of insurers who only want to collect premiums.

gosh I was going to say maybe insurance carriers should mandatorily cover theft on all policies
