California Gov. Gavin Newsom agreed to a watered-down proposal punishing Big Oil companies for charging high prices after a more aggressive version was swatted down.

struck a deal with state lawmakers Monday to"hold Big Oil accountable" amid a long streak of nation-leading consumer energy prices.cracking down on fossil fuel

"Together with the Legislature, we’re going to hold Big Oil accountable for ripping off Californians at the pump," Newsom said in a statement."Today’s agreement represents a major milestone in our efforts to drive the oil industry out of the shadows and ensure they play by the rules." of a proposal the governor backed in December to directly punish companies with financial penalties if their margins are determined to be too high. During a California Senate hearing in February, Democrats and experts alike expressed concern the original proposal could lead to even higher prices for state residents.

Though the new legislation represents a softer approach to punishing oil companies, industry groups still blasted it for creating additional bureaucracy.

They should just move out of the state. Period. Ot worth doing business in California

That’s just what CA needs, more oversight and gov’t regulation. Create another agency that will need to hire ppl and be funded at taxpayer expense.

He's back on the road to killing more jobs in California

Californians can now anticipate gas shortages and higher costs. How about rescinding the .53 cents a gallon gas tax? I thought the huge increase in yearly car registration was supposed to pay for the roads. Now all the new lanes on the freeways are toll roads.

California is just surreal.

YOU'RE AN ASS!!!

I remember in 2011 when GavinNewsom was being interviewed saying he was the homeless czar for the state of CA. How is that going CA? He also produces a larger carbon footprint than the average citizen. But he greases his hair and looks good on TV so lets vote for him

Bit by bit newsom is destroying the once great state of california. Why are the people allowing this travesty?

Joe and Newsom are on the same page! The we are going to put you out of business page! Expect prices to continue to climb!

This guy is a fruit cake

Unlike republican politicians who endlessly reward oil companies as they gouge us at the pump.

I am no fan of this guy but just going off of what this article says doesn't seem like a bad idea.
