South Africa’s government is taking legal advice on how to handle an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin in the event the Russian leader attends a BRICS summit in August. | News24_Business

The ICC issued the warrant against Putin on March 18 for war crimes related to the alleged abduction of children from Ukraine. South Africa is a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the court, and may be obliged to execute the arrest order.

“We are awaiting a refreshed legal opinion on the matter,” International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor told South Africa’s state broadcaster on Friday. “We are concerned about the situation of the people of Ukraine. What we would want to do is be in a position where we could continue to engage with both countries to persuade them towards peace.”

South Africa has adopted a neutral stance on Russia’s war with Ukraine. The government’s position has drawn opprobrium from some of the nation’s biggest trading partners, including the US and the European Union, along with some of the nation’s biggest banks. South Africa is unlikely to arrest any visiting head of state, said two officials at the foreign ministry who declined to be identified. The government and the ruling African National Congress are considering all options in an effort to avoid executing the warrant, they said.

_Business My Question remain why USA not a member of ICC

_Business Best legal advice is that RSA should walk away from the ICC, I.e. withdraw its membership and renounce it.

_Business The venal GovernmentZA , & PresidencyZA are blowing smoke Their actions will affirm the disregard for the ICC & the Roman Statute to which it's a signatory. Al Bashir-2015, nothing was done! 'Putin-2023' same thing. Why waste money on legal advice that will be ignored?

_Business They must not even dare think about it

_Business We will defend PUTIN with everything we have ..... Let those NATO dictators go jump in the nearest clif

_Business Pull the same stunt as Omar AL Bashir back in 2015... period

_Business They are getting legal advice, whether they’ll take it is a different story. The myanc has no backbone. Won’t change anytime soon

_Business Don't they know his physical address?

_Business Why?No one is going to arrest Putin in SA

_Business And why do they even seek legal advise and from whom?! 🙄Let Vlad come, do whatever everyone is supposed to do, and then he goes wherever he wants to go maan!

_Business

_Business Just arrest the war criminal & hand him over! Simple as that! It might just slightly panel beat out pariah image! FFS, you don’t need ‘legal advice!’

_Business No need to take any legal advice. Putin is welcomed in this country. We are not the ones in war with Russia. The US and Nato cannot use us in their nefarious pursuing of Russia. He is our friend and will not be arrested in Afrikan soil. Finish and klaar.

_Business He should be banned from coming to SA

_Business SA leaders will at no point arrest this man if they had ant moral core the Guptas would all be in jail. Don't hold your breath.

_Business Mxxm niphambene nina remember whn soith Sudan Pres was here on a Conference and the same thing wanted by ICC and we ddnt arrest him... YINTON NGK INGXAKI?

_Business Simple Move the meeting to a Non member of the ICC. Then we don’t have to be forced to do this nonsense.

_Business They don't need advice they're hypocrites & now they're playing with fire 🔥 that guy is no joke ICC must arrest him themselves

_Business Ramaposa must arrest Putin. When Zuma was removing RSA on the Rome Statue, he made sure that he overturned that decision. He has no option arrest Putin and Russia will attack RSA, and NATO won't defend RSA from Russia

_Business August it's more than 3 months away. If they really want him they can go get him. Without intimidating us

_Business To avoid drama and so much pressure ,let the meeting Go virtual, no stress.

_Business I don't understand how some people still breath air daily ... The same people saying the hate America and love Putin are the same ones who try be American rappers and gangsters every day

_Business 70 m will make a citizens arrest

_Business Can’t we have this thing virtual so that it saves everyone from this unnecessary drama

_Business ICC know where Russia is on the world map, they may sent their personel directly there.

_Business They should leave ICC the organization is biased

_Business

_Business Why doesn't Nato fly its troops to Russia and arrest him 🤔

_Business Why do South African whites hate Russia so much? Oh Russia helped fight to end Apartheid. They wish Apartheid was still here.

_Business Well they made Bushiri most welcome so why would they change.

_Business This is how world wars start😭

_Business For all we know, that arrest warrant was issued timing this BRICS+ summit. So, all those businesses that supply USA under AGOA should brace themselves and make market diversification a priority. There’s going to some painful adjustments, for SA can’t be some neo Poland.

_Business BUSH 1&2, BLAIR, OBAMA, CLINTON, NETANYAHU HAVE ALSO COMITTED THE MOST HORRIFIC ATTACKS ON CIVILIANS. WHY ARE THEY NOT CHARGED BY ICC? ICC IS RUBBISH. DOUBLE STANDARDS.

_Business ICC should send out arrest warrants for U.S presidents for killing millions in M.east to go and steal their oil.The ICC has no problem going after African leaders. Why not the U.S and UK.

_Business That legal firm issuing legal advise will the first to go under the bus when Putin asks ukuthi 'ubani othena mangiboshwe?'

_Business We will be wiped out. Russia is not a ICC signatory.

_Business I hope they are not paying too much. You only need to read

_Business 'The government and the ruling ANC are considering all options in an effort to avoid executing the warrant...' It would be in everyone's best interests to leave Vladimir Putin alone. We are talking about the second most powerful man on earth. Use your brains, people.

_Business Typical! South Africa has bigger things to deal with like sorting out the mess at Eskom and the criminals involved - but will now spend their energy on the possibility of arresting Putin.

_Business First bring the man here, then try abc unsolve all the drama.

_Business Ppl this is not news but fake news.

_Business What advice is this they are taking when there’s already an SCA order in respect to this matter

_Business What bloody legal advice do they need to do the right thing! S.A is a member of BRICS!

_Business Mandela once said don't make your enemies our enemies

_Business Let's withdraw from ICC. It's that simple

_Business I am the legal expert. South Africa, being party to the court, ICJP, they have an obligation to arrest a member for alleged war crimes. Else, they can advise the member not to set foot on SA soil.

_Business Cancel the BRICS meeting. 🇿🇦

_Business As much as I don't follow many things. Its March now, and we are talking about something that's going to happen in August. How is this news now or I am ignorant 😒

_Business They can’t even arrest Bushiri or Senzo Meyiwa s killer.

_Business Kikiki, 😂😂😂

_Business I think Putin should himself back out of the summit. He would know the possible repercussions for an already struggling South Africa. or mive the summit to Russia

_Business Voetsek South Africa !! Vladimir Putin committed crimes for crying out loud. Are you happy that millions of Ukranians are dead and some are all over Europe because of one man? Putin is a mass murderer and deserves to be arrested. He deserves to be punished!! Annoying bunch

_Business Legal advice or not, nobody in the whole world will arrest Putin.

nickhedley _Business Legal advice? Either they welcome Putin orthey don’t. Got fokoll to do with legal.

_Business 😂😂😂

_Business Leave the Rome statute, easy peasy... Follow me for more tips

_Business Unnecessary... let the man visit viva🇷🇺

ALETTAHA _Business All they need are some handcuffs.

_Business Somebody help me understand, why must the implementation of the warranty lie with South Africa? How about all those Western leaders who have invaded innocent countries?

_Business Putin Putin Putin Putin Putin 👍👍 that's how south Africa feels about him

_Business We’re a signatory to an international legal agreement that obliges us to arrest him. Simple really if you value the rule of law and moral obligations. Oh shit this is the ANC government so clearly none of that matters

_Business They dont give a fuck anyways 🤣🤣🤣why waste time on legal advice?!

_Business Why wait for August and not go to him now, how cowardice are these stupid ICC?

_Business Withdraw from the Rome statute. The cornerstone of every nations foreign policy is national interests. It’s not in South Africa’s strategic national interests to complicate relations with our BRICS partner, especially at a time when the collective third world is waging a war…

nickhedley _Business They've been here before, what legal advice are they looking for?

_Business So why ICC can't go and arrest him now?

_Business

_Business You are lying on our face, Pandor said it loud and clear what is their position, you will only fool gullible blacks....

_Business its moments like thes where CR would need someone like LindiweSisuluSA , who would call for political solutions to legal problems

_Business is there really any for this?havent SA courts pronounced themselves on matter similar to this?or maybe they want advice from Paul Ngobeni or Mpofu, who we all know what would be their advice.

_Business SA will become nothing more than collateral damage in this.

_Business If they can arrest him. That will be the end of ANC.

_Business Please give us the names of those South Africans. We want to forward them to Putin. The government doesn't represent the majority of us South Africans who support Russia and Putin.

_Business no need refere to the bushir case study

_Business They should leave him alone like they did ka that other one. Kana ke mang,Bashir?

_Business What legal advice? You simply can't arrest Putin. Isn't that common sense?😂😂😂😂

_Business Why not arrest him in his own country?

_Business Why are they still part of that bloody ICC, they must withdraw klaar

_Business PUTIN is us legal action no legal action

_Business We should leave that ICC before August it's simple I guess

_Business The Russians are clear on what will happen in that eventuality. As South Africans I’m sure we can all agree that we must not dare lay a finger on Putin.

_Business The last time they entertained a person fingered by the ICC they allowed him in and out and did not give a shit.

_Business This ICC arrest warrant is directed to SA they know he iz coming here hence they released a warrant of arrest. If they want him they must go arrest him in Moscow

_Business LOL why in South Africa? If they really wanted to arrest Putin, they would have done so a long time ago. What are they trying to do?

_Business All I know is Cyril and co shouldn't even dare... Russia will finish us in 2 weeks, this isn't Ukraine.

_Business worldwar3 is loading. Arrests or no arrests, the 🌎 is in danger

_Business No one will ever put a finger on Putin. This is the ultimate test of the US gut.

_Business Why even entertain this thought of arresting Putin? Flout the damn international law and keep it moving until western leaders are arrested for their war crimes in various countries?

_Business No need for legal advice withdraw from ICC

_Business Asikho is'dingo sezeluleko zomthetho. Ningalokothi nim'bophe.

_Business Eish ya'll gonna get us killed....mna bendisithi vele sitshintshe venue yonke lento ibese Russia gqibe singayi kwalapo🤷‍♂️

_Business Legal Advice? Hmmm, here's some free legal advice: arrest Putin the second his warmongering ass sets foot on South African soil.

_Business If they want him arrested Putin they can go to Russia and do it themselves the same way they did with Gaddafi and see how this one will end

_Business putin he will be allowed in to SA i bet you and he will not be arrested by this government

_Business If Omar Al-Bashir from Sudan could not be arrested you think they would dare try that on Putin? Lmao y’all play too much.

_Business South Africa said already. 'No Putin arrest in SA'

_Business No need to even seek legal advice, South Africa will not arrest the bear 🐻 on African soil. Those who want us to arrest him are avoiding a direct confrontation with Russia themselves, why would we be stupid? They can go to Russia and arrest him themselves.

_Business

_Business When Ted Koppel on his show asked Madiba about our relationship with Muammar Gaddafi, Madiba’s response was crisp: “Don’t make your enemies, ours…”.

_Business Best you don't take advice from Dali Mpofu (SC 😞).

_Business ANC to leave ICC!

_Business Putin must come to SA, the imperialist can go and jump.

_Business You don't need legal advice, they must make a political decision

_Business poet_this

_Business Easy - leave the ICC and reject it's authority. Otherwise they must charge Bush - Clinton - Bush - Obama with war crimes.

_Business Since when does our government care about what's legal?

_Business No need for all of that, SA should withdraw from that ICC nonsense

_Business In summary, SA won't arrest Putin.

_Business We need to make our own decision not being told what to do in our own country 🇿🇦

_Business It is once proven that this old man PresJGZuma is ahead of time, he clearly understood the complications IntlCrimCourt would bring to SA, I still remember him saying 'ICC only targets leaders who are not from West and its opponents' I mean abo BarackObama killed people but

_Business No advice needed, he is a criminal, he is a bad person, what do you do? Arrest him

_Business South Africa forever find itself on the wrong side of history. Our elected Government consistently make decisions to the detriment of our country. They were repeatedly voted back into power.

_Business So…taking “no sides” on the war, but protecting the perpetrator? Seems like this government has already taken sides. We will get sanctioned soon. Watch.

_Business Dumbest thing for SA to do would be attempting to detain or cause harm to the sitting head of any superpower.

_Business Hey Fuseg man, if America, China, India and Brazil they don't recognize the stupid arrest why would SA entertain such nonsense,

_Business Simple exit the ICC

_Business The Russian Airborne Forces🔥🔥🔥 Commander-In-Chief says they can get everywhere. They can reach everyone. 1930-2023. 93yrs on Guard! Wonder who will be so brave to arrest Putin🙄. When will Hilary & Barack get arrested for destroying Libya?

_Business No need as far as I’m concerned. Those who want him, know exactly where to find him. Capisce!

_Business SA could simply leave the ICC. Many countries are not part signatories, including the US. In any case this whole thing was symbolic, the point was made. A good point.

_Business Well what do you expect from a criminal run state…? South Africa has criminals running the country…

_Business Just say it that CyrilRamaphosa is being advised by Our_DA & Ruperts, who are representing a minority to side with Ukraine. Rather than the majority of SAns who are supporting Putin's decisive leadership against West.

_Business

_Business No legal advice needed. Just don't touch Putin, SA way you've never touched American presidents 2ho committed all sorts of atrocities all over the world.

_Business President Zuma wanted to withdraw SA from this nonsense, racist SAns and some low level miseducated clever blacks pathetically opposed the whole thing. Now terrorists US has connived with same court they threatened to issue a useless warrant of arrest. They want to damage SA.

_Business They can't arrest our ministers for corruption, where they'll arrest a president, and that too from Russia

_Business FOH y’all can’t even arrest bo bushiri and them , a whole Russian president ?fxcking relax.

_Business Let’s just not get involved with Russia. We have enough problems.

_Business We should arrest prince Harry or Tony Blair and extradite them to Afghanistan. The international criminal court of injustice absurdity of raping justice when western countries leaders commit atrocities. People who worked for ICC should join that Nigerian rebel leader in DOJCD_ZA

_Business Putin won't attend. He'll send a trade minister.

_Business Lol bunch of clowns

_Business Well if the Guptas can fly in and out of South Africa with no detection or action taken imagine what the Americans can do

_Business Typical ANC. Instead of just doing the right thing, they are scratching about in order to avoid doing the right thing.

_Business Those who want to arrest Putin know exactly where and when to find him. They must come and arrest him themselves. We not involve

_Business Zuma showed them middle finger when they said SA should arrest Albashir.

_Business U r trying to please your audience which leads you into writing fiction instead of facts. There is no 'IF' when it comes to BRICS member states attending a BRICS summit. All guests representing BRICS partners will touch down in designated airports to attend.

_Business I'm not a fan of Bolton, but sometimes you have to be decisive. US stood its ground when it came to the ICC about war crimes in Afghanistan. Hungary just did on this issue. The sky never fell down. State your position and deal with it.

_Business What is your take on the U.S killings in Iraq and Afghanistan? why Obama,Biden are not considered war criminals?...oops i almost forgot.

_Business South Africa can't be trusted,we know how they voted for a no fly zone and subsequently, brother Gaddafi was taken out of the game during the Zuma administration

_Business No legal advice needs to be taken. Arrest Putin when he gets here and hand him over to the ICC. No mystery.

_Business The legal advice is for money that was given to south Africa by western gov but ended up in the politicians pockets. Since they can't do their bidding, they on the hook 😐😐

_Business Llegal advice se se voet. Use your own bloody logic. Why has George Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton not been charged for war crimes and wanted by the ICC? SA government is just a bunch of captured house slaves

_Business They should also get advice on how to think.

_Business putin BRICS 🇿🇦🇨🇳🇮🇳🇧🇷🇷🇺✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾US is going down

_Business How do we always end up drawing the shortest straw when it comes to theese matters?

_Business How do you seek legal advise over an illegal warrant of arrest? Someone wakes up and feels, oh we must arrest President Putin for clout, and we go waste tax payers money seeking legal advise. This is Western agenda to isolate Russia and President Putin.

_Business No need to seek legal opinion because it’s not like some of NATO members are saints, why would South Africa want to arrest one of their own BRICS,NATO would never betray one another or arrest one of their own

_Business BRICS or even BRICS-plus: Without China is a brickwall without cement.

_Business 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

_Business He should be arrested, but SA govt will do exactly the same as Al Bashir, he landed here, had the red carpet treatment then flew home. Besides, who in SA actually has the balls to arrest Putin, Putin will Novichok them and their entire social circle

_Business Sebefuna ukusiqhatha ne-busy ke manje.

_Business SA must stay out of this please(phumani ku Putin)

_Business It's easy screw ICC

_Business Someone is probably praying for another pandemic just so that the summit would be Virtual
