Organizers have planned to put on a music benefit concert on May 27 instead.

This year’s Morgan Hill Mushroom Festival has been canceled after the security company hired for the festival terminated its contract, organizers said this week.Festival executive director Sunday Minnich said the security company cited “liability reasons,” and with less than two months to go, the Morgan Hill Police Department wouldn’t have enough time to vet a new company.

In 2017, a gunman from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel sprayed bullets into a crowd of concert-goes, killing 60 and injuring several hundred others. “I think everyone is on high alert,” Minnich said “I think the face of festivals for all communities is changing as new requirements are addressed.” Mass shootings have been on the rise since 2015, according to Everytown for Gun Safety — a nonprofit that advocates for gun control. In 2021, that number hit a high with 686 mass shootings in the United States.
