Rideshare giant Uber has set its sights on a new industry to disrupt after posting a huge rise in revenue and its first ever quarterly operating profit.

The rideshare giant turned the taxi industry on its head after it launched in 2012, and has expanded to additional services in food delivery, package delivery and freight transport.

“Essentially, we are building up services that we think rival traditional tour operators with, what I would call, the Uber delight: we already know who you are, we know your identity, we know your payment.” In Australia, the travel function on the rideshare app allows users to organise their itinerary, with the option to add plans for a flight, stay, restaurant and activities or sync pre-existing plans through email accounts.

Uber recorded a large profit on Tuesday despite missing revenue estimates, with profits for the June 30 second quarter at $US394 million , compared with a loss of $US2.6 billion last year.
