The old Seven Seas Restaurant on West Street in Corner Brook, which has been sold after sitting dormant for decades, is in a prime downtown location. Gary Kean/Saltwire NetworkCORNER BROOK, N.L. — If Ernesteen Chaisson had her druthers, she’d reopen the old Seven Seas Restaurant in Corner Brook and name it after the man who used to own it.

She was taught by Oue how to make fried won tons and other dishes, and said his Szechuan dishes were her favourite. “It’s a prime commercial location and it would definitely benefit from the expanded traffic we’ve seen on West Street in the last few years.” -“To be so successful in a community where he didn’t speak a whole lot of English, that was truly amazing,” she said. “He didn’t have to advertise anything. People just went there.”

The restaurant closed at some point before Oue died in 2004 and has largely remained frozen in time to this day. The new owner, Steve Zahanov, has indicated he’d like to come up with a way to celebrate the building’s place in Corner Brook history.“It’s so sad to see it go, but now that somebody has bought it I hope they keep something in the building that represents Wing and what he has done for the community.

A more diverse downtown business community would be a great incentive for people considering moving to Corner Brook, he noted, including young families who can fill gaps in the labour market.
