One of the weirdest things about party conferences is that Cabinet ministers hold parties, proper parties, in their hotel rooms. I should say first up, and very clearly, there’s nothing untoward about this. It’s a thing.
. And the parties mostly start at about 10.30pm. That’s when in normal times, away from conference, people would be in bed. So why do they do this? Because of influence and power. Power because Cabinet ministers are indeed powerful. Influence because there is no better time to influence people than in the middle of the night, after a long day, with a lot of wine, and cheese. It works.
So is conference more than a late-night party in a Cabinet minister’s bedroom? Certainly. And this year’s conference matters more than any for years. It’s most likely to be the last before an election. A lot of money is raised at conference, andBut the most attention, apart from the weird bedroom parties, is on the speeches in the conference hall. Though when I say speeches, I mean four: the Prime Minister and the Opposition leader, and the Chancellor and their Shadow.
There’s no point in delivering a speech unless people are listening, right? And for the reasons you want them to listen, not because you’ve just bombed. There’s bombed and there’s bombed, the kind that
