Sonia Mbele was expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Wednesday for contravening the Tax Administration Act.

Films’ spokesperson Thato Malindi stated that Mbele was “once again a victim of misconduct by her past peers and the media”.

The statement noted that according to Mbele’s knowledge, Rhosa, which she was no longer a part of, was closed down in 2019. It is said that when she left, Mbele asked her partners to close the company, but the public officer and accountant did not do so. Now, she is forced to attend these proceedings with no knowledge of the company still being operational when she left and decided to close down the company. Sonia further made her own arrangements to settle her portion of the amount, which means she wasn’t in contempt of court due to the assessment made.

In the statement, Malindi said it was confusing why the NPA made it seem like the businessperson deliberately missed court. “It confuses and derails us on why these allegations have been highlighted to make it seem like she has been ducking and dodging these allegations. To top it off, Sonia is still not well and went, yet again today, to the doctor for a further check-up but she is still working to settle her name, which has been dented by her previous peers and the media.”
