Ferropolis is a former open-cast coal mine in Gräfenhainichen, Germany, transformed into an open-air museum of industrial machines. The ‘city of iron’ site has a strict waste disposal policy, and deploys solar panels covering 2,901 sq metres to generate the 170,000 kW of electricity needed by the museum to function regularly. It also hosts events such as Melt, one of Germany’s largest outdoor music festivals, which is powered entirely by renewable energy produced onsite.

Less than 1% of the world’s discarded clothing is recycled, but the process aims to remedy thisThis salt mine in Transylvania dates back to the 11th-13th centuries. Closed in 1932 and abandoned, it was then extensively renovated from 2008 to 2010. Today the mine is open to tourists with attractions including a big wheel, minigolf park, table tennis, and billiard rooms.
