The spread of African swine fever in the country can be attributed to the illegal sale of 300,000 vials of ASF vaccine to hog raisers, an official of the farmers’ group Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura said.

Piglets are loaded on a truck ready for distribution yesterday at the provincial agriculture and veterinary field office in San Quintin, Pangasinan for backyard raisers whose livestock were affected by the African Swine Fever which hit swine population in the recent years. The launching activity is part of the Department of Agriculture and provincial government’s distribution of piglets and feeds to backyard raisers for ASF recovery rehabilitation and repopulation.

“There are reports and eyewitness accounts that the said ASF vaccines currently on trial are now being sold commercially and some of our colleagues have tried it to horrendous results,” So said in his letter. Outbreaks of ASF were reported for the past weeks in Oriental Mindoro, Ilocos Sur and Nueva Vizcaya provinces, forcing the concerned local government units there to declare a state of calamity in their jurisdictions.
