When Jane Hansen stepped down as chair of the Melbourne Theatre Company, she decided to leave with the same kind of bang that marked her entry to it – a massive financial donation.
Over her time with the MTC, outgoing chair Jane Hansen has championed a fund to help ensure the company’s future.Now, as her term as chair wraps up, she says: “I’d like to leave as I arrived.” She and Little have pledged an additional $500,000 to the fund, along with a promise to match any additional donations the MTC raises, up to a cap of another $500,000.
The precarity that Hansen speaks of has been thrown into sharp relief this month with local theatre company La Mama’s announcement that in 2025,as a direct result of losing government funding, and look at ways to move forward.
