Companies may be doing away with Summer Fridays as work-from-home days become more common.

Just 11% of North American workers say they have access to Summer Fridays, according to a November 2023 survey from Gartner of more than 1,100 people. In 2019, however,It's possible companies are doing away with Summer Fridays, the policy that allows workers to take a few hours or the entire day off during summer months, now that work-from-home Fridays are becoming more common in hybrid workplaces, says Caitlin Duffy, senior director in the Gartner HR practice.

The policy is pretty open-ended for the roughly 20 people who are eligible, Lacy says — starting at 2 p.m. every Friday from June to August, employees are free to use their time for themselves. That might mean finishing a project for the company or learning a new skill for their job, but it could also mean jumpstarting their weekend, enjoying hobbies, traveling or spending time with friends and family.
