The Gauteng Health department says it will continue to provide oncology services to patients

says it will continue delivering radiation oncology services and essential healthcare to patients. This follows the postponement of the case by the Cancer Alliance against the department at the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The Cancer Alliance, which represents 30 cancer organisations, accuses the department of alleged failure to spend over R784 million allocated to it for radiation and surgical backlogs in the province.“We did not oppose the postponement of the application to a later date by Cancer Alliance. The applicant will approach the court once further pleadings and documents have been filed for a date as the postponement is sine die.

In April, a coalition of health civil society groups marched against the Gauteng Department of Health. The group is made up of lobby groups – Section27, Cancer Alliance and Treatment Action Campaign. The march was to demand that the provincial health department spend the R784 million set aside by the Gauteng Treasury in March 2023 to outsource radiation oncology services.

These organisations say there are about 3000 patients on the backlog list waiting for cancer treatment, while the government has failed to spend the funds.
