The Gauteng Department of Education to launch investigation into culture of racism...

This follows the school’s governing body finding 12 out of 13 learners not guilty of misconduct in connection with allegations of racism.

The allegations stemmed from reports of a “whites-only” WhatsApp group where the 12 learners reportedly complained about black learners and made racially charged statements. Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona stated that the department would not interfere with the SGB’s findings. Mabona says, “The department cannot interfere with the outcome since the SGB is empowered by law to initiate and facilitate disciplinary hearings against learners. Consequently, the MEC will be launching an independent investigation into this matter, focusing on determining whether a culture of racism exists at the school…”

“This recourse, which the MEC has decided to pursue, will not investigate the 12 learners but rather the allegations that racism exists at the school,” Mabona adds.
