Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes called on the federal government to break apart the company's monopoly in a New York Times op-ed.

One of the cofounders of Facebook has revealed that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has eyed the company's domination of the tech industry since the early days of the social network., Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes criticized the company and its CEO for its"staggering" influence over the spread of news, users' personal data, and the way billions of people communicate. Hughes called on the federal government to take action against Facebook to reign in its power.

Zuckerberg's ambitions for domination are evident in a story Hughes shared from 2006, when Yahoo offered to acquire Facebook for $1 billion. The deal was poised to make Zuckerberg and others millionaires, and Hughes said that"just about every other person at the company" wanted the CEO to accept the offer.

However, said he didn't want to have to work under someone else, and eventually turned down the offer, Hughes said.
