Using the term 'open cast' when you mean lignite is deliberately misleading. Lignite is 2x as polluting as harder coals. Germany are addicted to cheap, open cast lignite. They use more now than they did 20 yrs ago. 20 years ago 38% of energy worldwide was coal, today still 38%.

Have you checked with Germany & Poland? They use 40%+ & 80%+ coal in their energy mix. The majority of which is the grossly polluting brown coal - lignite.

Natural gas is the best alternative, not 100 percent clean but much cleaner than coal.
